I'd want to go even further and make cops like doctors: make them each buy malpractice insurance, but with rates attached to the conduct of the entire department. One of those oh-so-rare bad apples getting caught raises everyone's rates. Wouldn't that inspire all those good ones to demand better behaviour if it improves their personal bottom line? I'd think that conservatives would back that kind of market-rooted policy where cops seek to improve each other's behaviour not by an appeal to conscience or ethics, but material self-interest.

"Defensive tactics"—y'know, being in riot gear and beating the fuck out of a defenseless person. The caption is also real. (This is from a court case.)

So it ocurred to me recently what are the chances that these "troops" in Portland are actually Blackwater types? Not sure if this question has been raised yet but the wife and I were throwing this about. I mean maybe the reason they don't have insignias etc is because they are mercenaries.

I'm not drawn to those kinds of conspiracy theories, but the heady mix of contempt for the law, dumb-assed incompetence, and allure of thuggery makes this difficult to dismiss. We know it'll be true if Blackwater gets stiffed for payment.revbob wrote: ↑24 Jul 2020, 8:59pmSo it ocurred to me recently what are the chances that these "troops" in Portland are actually Blackwater types?
