I didn't like Village Green much when I first heard it but it kind of crept up on me very quickly, and it's definitely in my top 10 albums of all time now. Conceptually and musically perfect. The "Echoes of a World" documentary from a year or two back is well worth checking out for the back story.

Yeah all The Equals 60s albums are ace.Heston wrote: ↑24 Sep 2019, 6:45pmOh, I missed the bit about the 2 per band rule. Re: Music opinion/question of the week...
Yup - start with Village Green. The Kinks had a really great run in the late 60's: Something Else, Village Green, Arthur, Lola Vs. Powerman. It's an era of music that has always fascinated me because I've never been big into many of the "big" American 60's bands like the Doors and so on. A lot of these records remain very much under the radar in the US. I know I didn't hear many of them until I was in my mid-20's (if not older). Tons of great stuff to listen to and discover. I had not listened to "We Are Paintermen" until I saw it on Marky's list and I'm planning on giving it a spin later today.

I'll have to get that, it's when I got the deluxe Village Green when I realized that yes, it is the best album that falls under the perameters given on the previous page. It was practically the only thing I listened to for like all summer or something.

Re: Music opinion/question of the week...
I think I've already asked this question, but can one separate the artist from the music? Morrissey spews racist rhetoric, but I still like a lot of his music and I don't know if I can stop listening to it. I'm also a big Ryan Adams fan. I have not listened to his music since the New York Times broke their story about him earlier this year. He's accused of being a major creep when it comes to relationships and also exchanging inappropriate texts with a teenage fan. He has not been charged with anything (yet). I don't support his behavior. I think he's at minimum a real self absorbed jerk. I still really like his music, however. I just haven't given myself permission to listen to him again.

I think you'd miss out on a lot of good art if you made moral integrity a prerequisite.

Re: Music opinion/question of the week...
We all separate art from artist to various degrees because we know that most musicians hold dubious views or have behaved in morally awful ways. Lennon was a domestic abuser. Elvis had a thing for young girls—hell, most rock musicians in the 60s and 70s probably committed statutory rape (and in some cases unqualified rape) with groupies. So we pick and choose what lines are sacrosanct and rationalize or ignore other things. It doesn't make us hypocrites, only that a commitment to absolutes and purities is best spent alone in a cave.

Separating the song from the artist. Wild Cherry playing rock music one night while a black dude shouted "Play Some Funky Music, Whiteboy" so the band go away and cut the song as a B-side but the record label like it so much they make it the A-side. And it gets to number 1 and sells millions of copies. Ironically it's one hell of a funky number but it's also ripped off from Fire" by The Ohio Players.
