He has seen The Proclaimers have had a 30 year career out of fan participation songs so he has written a whole catalogue of them!! Should keep him on the circuit another 30 years

Do you think it's because downloads/streaming made the physical medium of the music irrelevant - which means for our everyday listening we no longer rely on a physical product. We don't have to go to the record shop to pick up the latest release by our favorite band - we can stream on Spotify. This also means that a niche market like vinyl makes a comeback because those buying it are the fans who value more than just listening. If we're forced to pick a physical medium - we're going with the classic and not the CD. I don't know if I've explained this well, but hoping the point gets across.

Leaving aside the question of whether vinyl sounds better than digital and that's what is driving this, my suspicion is that the revival of vinyl is a revolt against the immateriality and even the over-convenience of music. It doesn't have to be hipster artificial outrage, but a genuine desire for physicality of cultural products and having to work a bit more to enjoy them. One of the criticisms of postmodernity is the loss of permanence, that everything is constantly in motion and being flustered is now normal, and so nothing fundamentally has meaning anymore (I'm not saying that's my take, just that it's a common criticism of pomo). Possessing physical objects, especially ones that evoke an early time, could be regarded as a response to it all, mainly intellectual, maybe therapeutic, maybe both.

That's actually not bad.

Also I was confusing "Superdrag" with "Supergrass." Didn't confuse them with "Supertramp" at least. Supergrass only had one 90s chart song in the US, "Cheapskate." Listening now, doesn't ring a bell.

It's far from "dead". There will always be those who want the CD just as there has bee vinyl since it's inception.

Not absolutely killed, but losing its dominant status. Vinyl was never dead-dead, but it was understood to be an archaic format by the 90s. Already back in the mid-2000s, a lot of cd pressing plants had to convert to manufacturing dvd's to stay operational.

I’d say at this point it’s a more niche industry, but not completely dead. It will last as long as people are still willing to purchase just enough to keep it profitable.
