School of Seven Bells, Alpinisms - Alternative Versions. Curiosities and nothing more, but worthwhile because Alpinisms is a superb album.

I’ve got a gig-packed diary (but not a dairy) for the next few months.
First up will be next Saturday when my brother’s band are headlining at the 100 Club! I’m looking forward to checking out the dressing room, and will have a ceremonial ‘visit’ to the bog where all the greats have taken a leak.
Then in no particular order, the Nightingales, Hamell on Trial, Mudhoney/Masonics, Hugh Cornwell, Jim Jones & the Righteous Mind, Richard Thompson.... anyone got any spare earplugs?

I was reliably informed the other day that you should never put the lid down on a turntable whilst listening to vinyl.
Anyone else knew this or was I the only one getting it wrong?

I checked these folks out and liked them for a bit and then lost interest. I should try again.

The first album was the only one that really grabbed me. After that, bits and pieces only. But they do sound like something that would appeal to you.

Thats interesting, I had a google and came up with this, I can see that having the lid down could contain vibrations from the needle, almost like playing music in a square room and the reverberations affecting the sonics as the waves bounce around the walls!, will have to find an appropriate track and try both ways, lid up and down, this web page is certainly split when it comes to this issue, I do believe you made me blush 101

Put the lid down prior to switching the needle arm on. Never put the lid down during playback would be my only advice.

Why put the lid down first? Surely the needle will still pick up the vibrations etc

That would be dependent upon the weight of the lid and make etc of the system.

I wouldn’t have thought that would make a difference as it was the noise from the needle vibrating around the inside of the lid and getting picked up by itself??

I can only think that the vibrations from the needle bouncing back from a lid that also vibrates creating unwanted noise. Surely this is not a new problem and the makers of expensive stereos etc would have worked this out. I know a lot of lids have cut-outs on the sides. I've owned numerous stereos down the years and never once encountered this problem.
