The National?
Biddy Mulligans.
I sank a few there back in the day. I also remember about it being bombed in '75 by the UDF.
That's the one. They used to come around with a collection tin at closing time and everyone stood up and they played that IRA anthem.
Fuck that ira shit. I would have spent a few hard drinking years around the London Irish pub scene, though more Archway/Holloway Rd area than Kilburn or Camden. I’d have some nostalgia for it but it was rough too, met a lot of guys who had come over in the 50s or 60s, hadn’t much to show for decades of toil and were broken and embittered by it. Sad scene in a lot of ways but that era has well passed by now I think.
Living through a few bombing campaigns in London I hated the IRA as much as anyone but I found most of the people in those pubs (certainly the ones I got to know) weren’t pro either they just didn’t want to cause trouble or draw attention to themselves. Always wondered how much of that cash made it to ‘the cause’.

Just read a piece about that bombing and it mentioned a Sinn Fein/IRA guy bragging about raising £17k in London every year which I guess was more than small change back then. It also mentioned the fact that the majority of people injured in the blast refused medical treatment and had quickly slipped away before the police could question them!

I’d agree that the vast majority would have no truck with it and would have been acutely embarrassed by it. Just made everyone’s lives more awkward than they needed to be.

If like me you often stumbled in to pubs as much as stumbled out of pubs in the late 70's early 80's you learned very quickly not to fuck with the locals as if they were cordial then that was all that was required. They served ale and that was enough, once you learned you were in a pub with IRA affilates you drank your ale and kept your mouth shut.

Brilliant stuff. If only Joe had produced more albums and less soundtracks. A proper full album of those sessions would be amazing.

As I’ve said before, the Joe tracks on Permanent Record make for a SOLID ep.

So much this. Such an odd thing that he recorded that excellent set of tunes in the same period as Earthquake Weather.

A genuine question please - what tracks would you have on the EP?

Thanks

The Permanent Record soundtrack pretty much served as an EP for me. Don't think I played Side B too often.

And it has about as much music actually written by Joe in its entirely as Permanent record does.
