Yeah, Rod couldn't lace Steve's boots! I can't stand Rod's voice while Marriott is probably my favourite singer ever. Was never a fan of the Faces at all.
I think Rod has one of the most criminally wasted voices in rock. He's not a bad singer - but he's spent decades making music that isn't so great. Steve was/is an overall superior musician and possessed maybe the best voice in rock history, but I also feel like the Small Faces/Faces comparison isn't as clean cut as some might propose...really two different bands that shared 3 members. I really like some of the stuff the Faces did, but despite being called the Small Faces on the cover of First Step - definitely not the same band... ;)
Same band, different vibes.
Both very much a lads band. I think The Small Faces had their softer moments lyrically. I prefer The Small Faces to the Faces hands down. But I like the Faces well enough. The comparison between Steve and Rod is inevitable but a bit moot as Steve blows Rod away. Rod in his early R&B days "Steam Packet" come to mind was a much better disciplined vocalist. Rod's problem is his material in his later years just plain sucked. I'm not anti Rod as some seem to be here and I like a lot of his early output.
Here's Rods first single from '64 a cover of Sonny Boy Williamson's "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl". His voice was a more disciplined trained style back then and that raspyness wasn't the main focus.

One of the most underrated singers of the 60's is Reggie King who was lead singer in mod band The Action he could give Marriott a run for the money.

i like how the Yarbird's version of schoolgirl has the 'oh-oh-oh-ohoh" that Bowie borrows in TVC15

Yeah agree a direct steal. Bowie was a big fan of The Yardbirds (as am I). Bowie's cover of Billy Boy Arnold's "I Wish You Would" owes more to The Yardbirds version than the original.

Nice cover of the old Tim Harding song. The Small Faces also covered Tim's song "If I Were A Carpenter".

Here's Tim's version.

I know the Hardin version and it's good, I just think Steve sings the the shit outta their version. Could be my favourite Marriott vocal.

Yep I agree musically there's not much in it but Steve's vocal takes it to another level.

Top-5 tracks from There are But Four Small Faces and go!

1) Tin Soldier
2) Talk to You
3) (Tell Me) Have You Ever Seen Me
4) I Feel Much Better
5) My Way of Giving

There is not a bad song on the entire LP.

Okay I'll play but I'm only taking tracks from the UK version of the album known as "The Small Faces" the first Immediate album. As this is how I first heard the album. So no "Itchycoo Park" "Here Comes the Nice" "Tin Soldier" and their B-sides as those don't belong on the album. They're some killer tracks though.

Could be another 5 on another day but today I'll go with these.

1. (Tell Me) Have You Ever Seen Me?
2. Get Yourself Together
3. Talk to You
4. My Way of Giving
5. Green Circles
