Not sure about the non-melody bit, I think the 80s had that in swathes.

There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board

Depeche had a fantastic run of albums. I am not very into their mellow 2000s/2010s stuff but before that, wow.
I feel that there is a fascistic element, for example, in the Rolling Stones . . .

Maybe in select Duran Duran choruses that aren't "Save a Prayer."
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Kim is really into newer DM too. I guess I just haven't given the recent stuff a fair shake. The singles I heard off the last one just didn't do it for me, though.JennyB wrote: ↑07 Mar 2018, 4:22pmIf you want any recs of non mellow latter DM, let me know. :)eumaas wrote: ↑07 Mar 2018, 4:21pmDepeche had a fantastic run of albums. Hoy should listen to Construction Time Again through Ultra at least. I imagine Speak & Spell is too Vince Clarke for him.
Found out the other day that when I was living in Maine I was only about an hour away from Vince Clarke's place!

Yeah - the most recent album is not...great. A couple of gems (Going Backwards and Cover Me) but otherwise blah. But it resulted in a great tour!eumaas wrote: ↑07 Mar 2018, 4:55pmKim is really into newer DM too. I guess I just haven't given the recent stuff a fair shake. I like it, but M4TM, V, and SoFaD are probably my faves. Although I was digging Black Celebration recently. I don't know why I don't listen to it as much. Maybe because it was the only one I didn't have in CD back in the day.

I'm trying. Not my fault you've established an impossible standard.

Those have all been my favorites at one time or another, especially BC. People really don't give them the credit they deserve. Add to that their groundbreaking videos. I'm so excited I'm seeing them again in May.eumaas wrote: ↑07 Mar 2018, 5:10pmI like it, but M4TM, V, and SoFaD are probably my faves. Although I was digging Black Celebration recently.
