In case anyone hasn't heard early versions of what might have been a second La's album: https://blonderazorblade.blogspot.ca/20 ... -tape.html

I've got the CD "Calling All" which has the Lee Mavers demos and its brilliant. Better than the album for me. It's an official release.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑02 Dec 2017, 6:16pmIn case anyone hasn't heard early versions of what might have been a second La's album: https://blonderazorblade.blogspot.ca/20 ... -tape.html

I had that one and one called, I think, Lost La's. So, so much promise there.Marky Dread wrote: ↑02 Dec 2017, 8:44pmI've got the CD "Calling All" which has the Lee Mavers demos and its brilliant. I've got every combination of their released stuff and it's all ace.

Re: Heston, Flex and Marky's Friday Top 5
I had something else in mind, but conversation from last week's Top 5 got me thinking...
Since we did top 5 debut records last time around, how about...
Top 5 Sophomore albums!
1. Bob Dylan - The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan
2. Crass - Stations of the Crass
3. Weezer - Pinkerton
4. Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
5. Amy Winehouse - Back to Black
I think all of these represented pretty staggering leaps forward from their debuts (and in a few cases, a high water mark that would never be replicated - looking at you, Weezer). I contemplated tossing on GEER, but I rank S/T quite highly and I like the "sophomore leap forward" concept, rather than just incremental improvement.

these are good, good picks. 16 year old me wouldn't have said Paul's Boutique is lightyears better than license to ill, but 32 year old me winces at a lot of spots on that debut record. Paul's Boutique still feels flawless.

Yes. I remember how disappointed people were when it came out. It was so ahead of its time.

Gonna recycle some pics:
1. Bruce - The Wild, the Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle (my all time fav Bruce album)
2. Weezer - Pinkerton
3. PE - Takes a Nation of Millions (fav PE album)
4. Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique (fav Beasties album)
5. Zeppelin II

Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Blimey, Solid Gold must be good if it is much better than Entertainment. I'd better give it a listen.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑08 Dec 2017, 2:07pmNo order other than how they emerged from my brain.

Wait, do these have to be better than the first album or just really fucking good second albums? I went with the latter assumption. All my picks still work, tho the Go4 is a bit of a stretch.
Edit: Why is the quoting fucked up?

Re: Heston, Flex and Marky's Friday Top 5
I would just say records that avoided the "sophomore slump". I decided to pick records I thought made a significant improvement on the debut, just because I found it to be an interesting exercise, but that was not a requirement.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑08 Dec 2017, 2:42pmWait, do these have to be better than the first album or just really fucking good second albums? Re: Heston, Flex and Marky's Friday Top 5
Solid Gold is awesome though. I often think of it as more industrial sounding than the debut, kind of in the same way that Closer is moreso than Unknown Pleasures. Not as in "industrial music," but more the mood or driving pulse.Dr. Medulla wrote: ↑08 Dec 2017, 2:42pmWait, do these have to be better than the first album or just really fucking good second albums? Either way, it's a rad as hell album. I like it a lot.
