I just saw him in July. I was a passive fan but he sold it. He did an endless steam oh hits for three hours and finished with American Girl which he dedicated to Alexis Arquette. He also apologized for using the confederate flag early in his career. I’ll remember him as an original, he didn’t sound like anyone else and was pure Americana.

Not even remotely a fan of his music—tho he did play the hilarious Lucky on King of the Hill—but 66 is way too young.
Endut! Hoch Hech!
I feel that, had he lived, John Lennon would have loved Donkey Kong.

Actually, Petty is still technically "clinging to life" but not expected to survive the end of the day, apparently. Somehow, this celebrity death is managing to meet the threshold for horror required to take place today.

I got to see him a few years ago at Outside Lands. He was pushing some new album, but when he played the hits, man did those resonate. Cool to hear him apologize for using the confederate flag. I mentioned the awkward moment in the "Rebels" live video with his black back up singers singing in front of the flag.BostonBeaneater wrote: ↑02 Oct 2017, 4:23pmI just saw him in July. Anyway, he was a strong presence in my musical awareness from the get go as his late 80's hits were right when I was becoming cognizant. I remember Mary Jane's Last Dance and You Don't Know How it Feels were on a constant loop in the early 90's. My sis was a huge fan and made me a comp of his deeper cuts. I really enjoyed a number of them.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Yeah this is sad. Not a fan but can appreciate his talent. Saw him lice back in high school at Jones Beach on a beautiful summer day. I got drunk and horrible sumburn.

Way too young. I enjoyed a few of his songs through the years. R.I.P.
