Somehow missed 8 out of the 40 questions on my psych exam. Really at a loss for how I screwed up on it. Won't find out until Tuesday.
Yikes. At the same time, it pretty much happens to everyone at some point. I once almost missed a philosophy midterm. Somehow it didn't click with me why there was an in-class review of material one day. Then, the night before the next class meeting, I hung out drinking with friends till late. When I got home, by blind chance I looked at the syllabus to see whether I had to do any reading and realized that there was a midterm that morning. So, a few hours of drunk cramming and a predictable 60-ish on the exam. Many of my educational experiences can be used to comfort students that all is never lost.

It was a multiple choice too! One of those scantron things that science teachers like to use so they don't have to grade. I'm actually wondering if there were mistakes in the questions. So far I have 100 on every quiz and only missed about two questions in class. Also tended to get things right that no other classmate got right (& I know this because she uses a polling app in class). Really baffling. I am in the middle of moving and didn't get much sleep--maybe I had an absence seizure and missed some questions?

Are you given to absence seizures? If so, that would be a plausible explanation given your other quizzes.

What's the quiz worth in terms of final grade? I've had to calm down upteen students that on an assignment worth 10% the difference between 6/10 and 8/10 is 2 points, which is likely meaningless in terms of the final letter grade. Admittedly it's a bit different in classes where the grading is interpretive compared to multiple choice exams, as I can always bump someone up if they're really close to the next tier. But, still, unless the assignment is worth 25% or more, one slip up doesn't have to compromise the final grade.

Shit, never saw this. Sorry.

Apparently it wasn't enough to fuck up my final grade. I just barely got the A, but I got it.

I was somewhat worried that I would get an A- or B+ then I worked out that even if I did, I would still be on track to graduate summa cum, so I relaxed about it

Is the US the only country to do the Latin thing (summa, magna)? My undergrad degree was a BA with High Honours in History, while B's was a Double Honours in History and Native Studies, which I would guess are the equivalent of summa and magna, respectively.

Actually, UNC calls it distinction and highest distinction. I call it summa cum out of habit.

Regardless, well done. If you do decide on grad school, summa will get you thru some filters.

I was told by my adviser to request senior underload as I only have two classes until I fulfill the requirements for graduation. She assured me that I wouldn't have any trouble with my financial aid. So I enrolled in the two classes, and as part of my application for graduation, I requested senior underload status.

I noticed a couple weeks ago that there was a financial aid hold on my account because I was enrolled in insufficient credit hours. OK, I guess the Office of Financial Aid and whoever is in charge of graduation do not communicate. So I sent them a message to inform them that I was doing senior underload. It took them a day to get back to me, but they said that if taking 6-11 hours the reduction is only to the amount for tuition and books, but not to whatever covers living expenses. OK, makes sense. I told them I was taking 4 hours. They said they would register the information and it would take 1-2 weeks to make the adjustments. This was on the 19th.

So yesterday I get an email from someone at Financial Aid. I didn't see it until today. The email tells me:
For information purpose I am writing to inform you that if you are taking 4 credit hours, you will only be eligible for a federal Pell grant of $740. Let me know if you still want to stick with four hours or take at least half-time (6 to 8 hours).

See email below emphasizing senior underloads between 6-11 credit hours.
and the individual attached the original reply from Financial Aid. I read the above as meaning the federal Pell grant would be reduced. Still sort of alarming given the tone of the message. So I asked if it meant my living expenses would not be covered in the fall. I asked if I would still be receiving the same amount in university grant and federal loan, and just see a reduction in the Pell grant. Rather than reply in text, the individual sent me a table that seems to say that if I do not take more classes, I will be unable to receive the loan or the university grant.

It's almost August, and finding spots in UNC courses is notoriously difficult even when registering on time. I have emailed one more time to get a verbal confirmation that they are only offering me $740 in aid. Hopefully the employee at Financial Aid will see fit to reply in sentences.

Anyway, go UNC for fucking me over last minute! I guess I am either going to have to find a way to take a completely superfluous course or work while attending classes, which probably means waiting tables on nights/the weekend since university classes preclude a 9-5.

Ugh. WIthout a doubt, colleges have become more bureaucratic (in the most pejorative sense) as tuition costs have risen. Some kind of intro to computers (for non-majors) would seem like a good blow-off class if you have to come up with one more.

I already took Comp 101 for my quantitative science requirement, unfortunately. But I have also unearthed this gem:
Students who are approved for a senior underload will be allowed to drop non-required courses after the 10th day of the semester, but will not be eligible for a tuition refund.
So I may be able to just pile on miscellaneous classes, never attend them, and then drop them ten days into the semester in order to receive the full amount. Seems a byzantine method of getting my necessary aid but if it works, so be it.
