Re: The Challenge Thread
If anyone wishes to an Idlewild challenge, I'll whip ya up a dozen songs. (Reason: listened to them walking to campus today.)

Re: The Challenge Thread
Oh yeah, I was gonna do some stuff here. Here's a Pink Floyd Challenge (for Doc, Matey, and anyone else?). I'm going for actually trying to make a convincing case rather than purposely ruin anyone's day, but I am going to try to pick one song from every album (at least through The Final Cut) because otherwise it would mostly just be Syd Barrett cuts given the audience, so:
1. Arnold Layne, single, 1967:
2. Lucifer Sam, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, 1967:
3. Jugband Blues, A Saucerful of Secrets, 1968:
4. The Nile Song, More, 1969:
5. Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun [Live], Ummagumma, 1969:
6. Summer '68, If, 1970:
7. One of These Days [Edit], Meddle, 1971:
8. The Gold It's in the..., Obscured by Clouds, 1972:
9. Brain Damage, The Dark Side of the Moon, 1973:
10. Have a Cigar, Wish You Were Here, 1975:
11. Pigs (Three Different Ones), Animals, 1976:
12. Waiting for the Worms [Edit], The Wall, 1979:
13. Not Now John, The Final Cut, 1983:
Bonus Tracks:
14. Wish You Were Here, Wish You Were Here, 1975:
15. See Emily Play, single, 1967:
And here are the above tracks as a Spotify playlist for those who use that service:
1. Arnold Layne, single, 1967:
2. Lucifer Sam, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, 1967:
3. Jugband Blues, A Saucerful of Secrets, 1968:

Re: The Challenge Thread
Follow up thought to the above: this selection is with Doc in mind more than Hoy, who I presumably would have simply selected the drummiest songs in the band's catalog for.
Addendum: And I'd be interested in an Idlewild challenge- it looks like maybe Thursday evening would be a good time for me to sit and have a listen.

Re: The Challenge Thread
Okay, I'll take Flex up on this. Thursday evening is probably best for me, too, as I'll be able to clear out a lot of work between now and then. I'll whip up an Idlewild list probably by this evening.

Re: The Challenge Thread
I'd join in on the Idlewild challenge, but I'm going to be on the road all day for a funeral (my father's sister; I'm ok, I wasn't very close with her). But I'll gladly read the responses later.
I suspect I'll mostly dig the Floyd playlist Flex made. I don't hate much of their stuff outright, and I genuinely like several of their songs.

Re: The Challenge Thread
Sorry to hear about your aunt's passing, Jon (close or not).
Here's my list. Man, going thru and limiting myself to fifteen, I was hit my how few songs of theirs I genuinely like after The Remote Part. So it's heavily weighted to their first three albums, before they wanted to be R.E.M. (worse, crappy period R.E.M.). As with my Swans Heston torture, I went in chronological order.
1. “Queen of the Troubled Teens” (1st single)
2. “I Want To Be a Writer” ("Chandelier" b-side)
3. “A Film For the Future” (Hope Is Important)
4. “I’m a Message” (Hope Is Important)
5. “Idea Track” (100 Broken Windows)
6. “Actually It’s Darkness” (100 Broken Windows)
7. “Roseability” (100 Broken Windows)
8. “A Modern Way of Letting Go” (The Remote Part)
9. “American English” (The Remote Part)
10. “Stay the Same” (The Remote Part)
11. “A Distant History” ("You Held The World In Your Arms" b-side)
12. “No Generation” ("You Held The World In Your Arms" b-side)
13. “The Work We Never Do” ("You Held The World In Your Arms" b-side)
14. “In Competition for the Worst Time” (Make Another World)
15. “City Hall” (Post Electric Blues)

I'd never be able to offer a challenge because my taste is impeccable and everyone would just gush praise.

Not that it matters greatly but Animals was released in 1977.

Re: The Challenge Thread
Interesting trivia you probably know already: That's Roy Harper singing on "Have a Cigar," rather than any of the Floyd members. Apparently, Waters had blown out his voice recording "Shine On..." and Gilmour didn't want to do it for some reason. Harper happened to be in the studio, and the rest is history.Flex wrote: ↑21 Mar 2017, 12:54pmFollow up thought to the above: this selection is with Doc in mind more than Hoy, who I presumably would have simply selected the drummiest songs in the band's catalog for.
