If you missed it, there's also one I posted at the end of the last page.

Very excited for Fallen Angels, and loving the new overall sound of how it will be ("Melancholy Mood").

Yeah, digging the new song. High hopes the new album will continue his late period streak of solid album releases.

Question: How many of youse have read Greil Marcus' Invisible Republic (or it's later edition, The Weird Old America)? I'm going to be using it next year and am curious whether you have any thoughts/impressions/complaints/grievances/plaudits.

I've never read any Greil Marcus! I know his arguments at secondhand.
I feel that there is a fascistic element, for example, in the Rolling Stones . . .

I've studied the phenomenon of neo-provincialism in self-isolating online communities but this place takes the fucking cake.

You might appreciate (maybe that's too strong a word) his Lipstick Traces. I find the book's premise useful but execution as more bullshit than not. Actually, the premise—the weird way that ideas circulate—has ended up being really important to my own work. But, still, it's a dubious book.

I read weird old America in college and enjoyed it, although I'm not steeped in music criticism so I don't have a lot to compare it to. Probably worth a revisit to see if I find him insufferable now.

As pre-conditioned as I am to find Marcus annoying now, that one still doesn't piss me off. Still, the question of his style is something I hope to get students to talk about.

I read Invisible Republic about five or six years ago. I didn't hate it, I liked the Harry Partch and Big Pink sections.
