RIP Prince

Post by gkbill »

Hello,

RIP Prince. He had a lot of great music, tried a lot of styles, and was always entertaining - arguably the best Super Bowl halftime performance.

Holy shit, just heard.

Was never a huge fan, but yeah, utmost respect for the dude. He had some absolutely excellent songs, and a very talented musician. RIP

For me, this is as awful as Joe Strummer, Lou Reed and David Bowie dying. Except that Prince had more music and performances left in him than all three of those cats combined, which is really, really saying something.

My generation's own Duke Ellington. Good night, sweet Prince.

I saw a section from Miles Davis's autobiography where he said basically the same thing about Prince being basically a modern Duke Ellington. He says they were talking about making an album together that never happened.

He also said in a different interview that Prince's onstage persona was a mixture of James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, (I think) Little Richard, and Charlie Chaplin, which is surprisingly accurate.

There's been rumors for years that Miles did actually work with Prince, '88-ish, around the time of the 'Black Album'/'Lovesexy' sessions. From what I've heard, either Prince or Miles himself didn't like Miles' performances.

Prince's vaults are famously huge; almost literally, all the dude did was record music. Maybe we'll hear that stuff one day (if it actually went down).

EDIT: yeah, and the Charlie Chaplin reference is brilliant. For all PRN's badass image, there was still this whimsical, vulnerable, very funny, and often very sweet side to him.

At Prince's last gig, on the 14th at the Fox Theater in Atlanta, he did Bowie's "Heroes" as part of his encore. Jesus Christ...

Holy fuck.

And he might be the only person that could pull off a cover of "Heroes."

Ah, thanks, man. I was just searching for this! Can you imagine how a full band version would've sounded?
