MoranJortsChernobyl

Post by JennyB »

So, I know we joke a lot about this dump that I call home, but we are facing a really frightening and fucked up situation right now. To give a very brief summary, there is a landfill about 10 miles from my house where an underground fire is burning. Not that big of a deal, right? Well, right by that landfill is an EPA superfund site which is basically a repository for discarded Manhattan Project nuclear waste. This site has not only been kept fairly under wraps over the years (people in the area are dying of rare cancers about 300% higher than the national average), but in about 3-6 months, the fire is going to reach the radioactive site. Isn't that GREAT? If the conditions are right, a plume of radioactive smoke is going to spread fallout all over the metro area. The only was for this to possibly get resolved is for the EPA to turn the site over to the Army Corps of Engeneers for cleanup, but they have so far refused to do so. Last year, our two senators and the two reps from the area (and those four never play nice) sent a joint letter to the EPA. No response. The landfill is owned by Republic Services, and they have so far refused to do anything either. Bill Gates is the majority stakeholder in Republic, and he has been unmoved so far. Here is the latest article about the situation, as well as the best coverage, which has been from Al Jazeera America:

I know. We are fortunate to have the resources to leave. I'm really worried about the people who don't.

Fucking hell. How can't that not be called a state of emergency and steps be taken to prevent the worst from happening?

We just started an online and print petition effort to have the governor declare a state of emergency, which he seems unwilling to do right now. He declared one after the Ferguson riots, but not for this, an actual emergency.
