Noisy fuckers, I wish drums had a volume button. When our drummer is soundchecking he bashes fuck out of the drums, much to my annoyance. When I protest he says he has to make sure they're in tune, to which my retort is always, "Since when did you have to tune fucking cymbals?"
There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board

Plenty of great drum solos out there. I'll take the concise solo at the end of Rock and Roll over Moby Dick. Jazz is generally better for drum solos due to the fact that jazz drummers are generally better, but they are also more to the point than rock solos. As a technician, I don't generally see more impressive solos than Buddy Rich.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Which do you think is the more important variable—that jazz drummers are generally more talented or that jazz lends its better than rock to drum solos?

Eh, it's probably more the genre thing. I guess Buddy did gaudy drum solos like that, but that was pretty rare and I don't think they ever ventured into 20 minute territory. There is less emphasis on bombast and grandeur vs. stadium rock.

Okay, thanks. My gut sense has been that genre convention is a more powerful dictator than individual ability/ambition.

I loved the film Whiplash about a young jazz drummer consumed with ambition at a music conservatory. JK Simmons is the teacher the film sets up as the cliche inspirational mentor, but is obviously a horrible abuser on a mad power trip. Or is he? It's a fantastic watch with great music and a story to match. First time drum solos haven't bored me cos the effort going into them is integral to the story and they're filmed like a Hitchcock suspense scene. Run - don't walk - to torrent or stream the film.

I see that it's currently on Netflix. Now, I was just sitting while looking that up. Am I still obliged to run somewhere?
