Happy Birthday, Dr. Medulla!
Re: Happy Birthday, Dr. Medulla!
All you missed was a bunch of Showdaddy (who?) threads and Flex feeding my new obsession with Kokomo-era Beach Boys.
Your return is VERY welcome.
Melissa is happy to have you back too.

Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Oh, I tried to drop you an email to check in, but sadly got bounced (I assume you no longer use the same email as in 2008), so I'm actually not an unfeeling monster, like Flex.

Oh, I thought FOR SURE your wife dumped you. I'm glad she didn't and I'm glad you're around, buddy.Dr. Medulla wrote:Apologies for repurposing this birthday thread, but I’m not big on starting new ones. Anyway, I’m back (I think). Short version of what happened is that I went on a new epilepsy medication back in April and one of the rare side effects is severe depression. And I won the lottery. It was a very shitty time of collapsed confidence and ego, but I’m off the drug now and it’s finally out of my system, so I’ve got a greater measure of balance again. Plus, as Rahm Emanuel put it, never let a good crisis go to waste, so I used the experience as therapeutically as I could, with plenty of self-evaluation and -reflection. I’m still reassessing a lot of things about myself, but one is that I really enjoy the group here. The quality of the minds and the conversation is simultaneously entertaining and edifying. So for that very selfish reason, I've decided to try to re-engage.
I do want to thank the people who contacted me and have checked up on me the last couple months (especially Jen; I've incurred a permanent debt to you). Folks likely don’t realize the value of your brief notes of concern and the like, but it did matter. A lot. For those who have dealt with depression (pharmaceutically induced or otherwise), you know that an isolated mind is a toxic pit and so hearing from people helped. I apologize to many of you for being a bit circumspect about what was going on with me—as well, a public apology to Gene, to whom I unfairly lashed out at—but having earned your concern means a lot and it’s something I won’t forget.

You know what would have been funny? If you stuck around and posted as "Goth Medulla"

Yeah we couldn't find a suitable Canadian substitute who was a fan of both Wire and the fucking Red Sox.JennyB wrote:I am so glad you're back. Thank you for the kind words, too. This board truly wasn't the same without you.

True the game isn't the same without Jeets but we all have to accept his departure and the substandard product that is post Jeter MLB. Perhaps one day his very projeny will grace us with his intangibles and smoldering eyes while playing the game as it should be played.Dr. Medulla wrote:After Jeter abandoned us mortals, all baseball games have been just exhibition contests. So glad you're back. The comment you made about isolation is spot on. In the same boat.
