Re: Happy Birthday, Dr. Medulla!
Apologies for repurposing this birthday thread, but I’m not big on starting new ones. Anyway, I’m back (I think). Short version of what happened is that I went on a new epilepsy medication back in April and one of the rare side effects is severe depression. And I won the lottery. It was a very shitty time of collapsed confidence and ego, but I’m off the drug now and it’s finally out of my system, so I’ve got a greater measure of balance again. Plus, as Rahm Emanuel put it, never let a good crisis go to waste, so I used the experience as therapeutically as I could, with plenty of self-evaluation and -reflection. I’m still reassessing a lot of things about myself, but one is that I really enjoy the group here. The quality of the minds and the conversation is simultaneously entertaining and edifying. So for that very selfish reason, I've decided to try to re-engage.
I do want to thank the people who contacted me and have checked up on me the last couple months (especially Jen; I've incurred a permanent debt to you). Folks likely don’t realize the value of your brief notes of concern and the like, but it did matter. A lot. For those who have dealt with depression (pharmaceutically induced or otherwise), you know that an isolated mind is a toxic pit and so hearing from people helped. I apologize to many of you for being a bit circumspect about what was going on with me—as well, a public apology to Gene, to whom I unfairly lashed out at—but having earned your concern means a lot and it’s something I won’t forget.

Been away and missed all this — great to hear you're doing better, Hooks.

After Jeter abandoned us mortals, all baseball games have been just exhibition contests. Would the Sox have constructed such a laughable team if the games still meant anything?revbob wrote:Glad to hear you're okay. Now how about those Sawks?

I never thought I'd say this, but thank goodness we have more Canadian content on the board again. Our long Showaddywaddy nightmare is over.
