The Shoegazing Thread

Post by Kory »

This seemed important enough to me to start a new one around. I've gotten into it relatively recently and it seems like there's a lot of good suggestions with more to come. I'm consolidating some below partly for my own ease of reference, but I guess you guys can use it too.
Dirty Harry wrote: Best shoegazing albums I've heard this year

Whirr - Sway
Odonis Odonis - Hard Boiled,Soft Boiled
Nothing - Guilty Of Everything

You should also check out the film\documentary that's coming out soon about the whole history of shoegazing called ' Beautiful Noise' its took about 4 years to get it released so it should be good, think there's a trailer for it on you tube

try some of these, some undiscovered classics from the 90's and some newer ones.

Lilys - In The Presence Of Nothing
Drop Nineteens - Mayfield (Never released but it was leaked a few years ago sounds a bit rough but still sounds amazing)
Astrobrite - Crush
Boo Radleys - Everythings Alright Forever (Britpop band who started off as a Shoegazing band and should have stayed that way)
Fleeting Joys - Despondent Transponder
Ringo Deathstarr - Colour Trip
Pinkshinyultrablast - Happy Songs For Happy Zombies EP
Tatuki Seksu - Hanazawa EP (Japanese Shoegaze)

I'll add Moose

Their excellent early EPs are collected on the "...XYZ" (UK) comp. If anyone has a rip of their "Honey Bee" LP, I'd be grateful.

(Also, drummer Richard Thomas [Dif Juz] & bassist Lincoln Fong were in the touring JAMC, after Douglas Hart & John Moore left...)

I'll add some further probably obvious ones:
Chapterhouse: Whirlpool
Catherine Wheel: Ferment
Lush: Spooky
Swervedriver: Raise
The Verve started out in this style, I think A Storm in Heaven is pretty good

I don't know if we want to include dreamier pop stuff, I get a kick out of Julee Cruise and Hooverphonic's Blue Wonder Power Milk.

(As I said, I'm pretty green)

Anyone heard Th' Faith Healers? Their Lido album from 1992 might be considered "shoe-gazey".

Works for me.

Highly Biased Observation: Shoegaze bands had the best EPs of any genre in the early 90s.

I checked out Th' Faith Healers a few years ago, at a time that I probably wasn't ready for them. I'll have to give them another spin. I go through phases frequently in which I'll hear something, decide it's not for me, but say to myself "eh, I'll probably like that in about 5 years." I'm almost never wrong.

Mezcal Head is another great one by Swervedriver, but Raise is a little more "traditional" shoegaze.

Somebody was trying to tell me that CDs are better than vinyl because they don't have any surface noise. I said, "Listen, mate, "life" has surface noise."

I've been listening to Tearwave since that was posted, digging it a whole lot.
