I may be off base but I always believed himself and Joe had quite a bit in common, temperamentally I mean. They both left quite a few people in the lurch in their day, but nobody ever seemed to hold a grudge for long. Fair point. I did read somewhere that Rowland fully acknowledged the lift and Archer was cut in for a writing credit so some reparation was made. Rowland was just more ruthless and focused and driven than Archer was, which I guess O’Hara realized and quickly jumped ship. Allowing Rowland to keep the demo was a fairly naive thing to do really, like he still wanted and needed Kevin’s approval. Ended up getting a lot more than he bargained for!
But at least Archer ended up making more money from it than if Rowland had never made the steal. I would have thought that would have taken some of the sting out of it at least.
I also wonder about the accusation that Rowland thieved the entire too rye ay sound. If you listen to the early album demos, some from early 81, they’re not far off the finished product so maybe Dexys were already going down that road? Though Kevin always insists Too rye ay is his least favorite of their albums and perhaps that murky history has something to do with it.

Fair points.
By his own admission Rowland was driven and focussed and to that end ruthless. He wouldn't let anything get in the way which unfortunately meant his band mates along the way too. He makes no secret that he made several errors of judgement and regrets it now.
