In The Kennedy Imprisonment, Garry Wills speculated that JFK wouldn't have withdrawn from Vietnam because of issues of masculinity. A plausible argument. Clinton throws it right out there that it's about seeming less of a man. Foreign policy by dick size.

Only a crazy person is suited for the structures of power as constituted. People who argue personality are half right—they are all assholes and egomaniacs—but the mechanisms only work with assholes and egomaniacs at the wheel.

The brits are showing an unusual backbone in saying no to the US when America is shuffling about for a war. I reckon Obama probably made a pass at Cameron's gorgeous cockney tea girl #onlyflexkidswillgetthisone

I saw some comment on twitter to the effect of "Obama is the first American president to lose a vote in the House of Commons"

Supposedly this is the first time the Commons has voted against a PM's war wishes since 1782.

I don't generally enjoy turning war into a parlor game, but it's going to be genuinely fascinating to see how Congress deals with being asked for an AUMF with Syria. I guess Peter King is on CNN at the moment flipping his shit for being put in this position.

Are there any Republicans in the House who can pass for having gravitas when it comes to foreign policy? I can't think of any. Graham and McCain in the Senate are their, um, deep thinkers in Congress.
