I was pleased they let him come off as a twat--which he certainly was to his wife. I've read her book, which the film was based on, and the film was pretty true to that.

But in some ways you're right. There's too much Ian being quiet and mysterious. What I've read about him indicates he could have a good time as well, as into practical jokes and Good Natured Dumb Assery as the rest of the band.

My favorite bit was where the band's coming back stage after Ian has a fit and they're making cracks about it.
and that Sam dude sings nothing like Ian....
He did at certain points. You can't have carbon copy anyway, although if you want to see a better physical embodiment (not in looks but performance mannerisms), Sean Harris nailed it.
but I guess the movie had to be made like this in order to capture the audiences emotions, eh? Which it does....it's the first movie I got choked up over in a looooong time.

I need to cheer myself up somehow.... :disshame:
I didn't get choked up over it. I guess I was supposed to. It just brought me back to the music, made me want to listen to some Joy Div.
I feel that there is a fascistic element, for example, in the Rolling Stones . . .

Well, like someone said before, they did a good job at humanizing Ian. His apparent ways with women made me lose a bit of respect for him. But I'm sure he had more of a sense of humor and good-naturedness than what was portrayed in the film.

Did Ian really dance like Sam did on stage? I guess your right that Sam got his singing right at some parts....like that last part of Transmission.

For some reason I got choked up half-way through and not at the end like most people would. I thought the end was so depressing I was actually smiling. Sadistic I know.

Riley's dancing wasn't quite frenetic enough but hey, good enough job.

The only thing I hate about the movie is that it perpetuates the idea that a depressed person seems depressed all the time--not true. I'm horribly depressed most of the time yet I'm a class clown, always wisecracking and the like--i've been told i'm "sunny"

Depends on the person—no two depressions are the same. When I went thru my serious life-altering depression, for a period of about five months I was barely functioning. I've since learned enough about what goes on in my psyche—or at least pay better attention—that when I slip into depressive episodes that I can control the effects better. While this doesn't contradict your criticism of the IC—about which I think you're right—it isn't applicable across the board.

I only know a handful of their songs - Transmission, Shadowplay, Love Will Tear Us Apart and a few others. Decent but if those are the best they got - meh.

Stone me but I like the Killers' version of Shadowplay more. :shifty:

It must be Bruce that is the culprit for realizing that Joy Division is boring.

As for LWTUA, was Ian Curtis that lazy?

Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Well, yeah, depression can definitely manifest as you mention--I've seen it! But with Curtis it's a different story, and that's one aspect of him I really identify with.

Based on personal experience, I wonder how much carbamazepine, the drug he was prescribed, added to or even caused his "subdued" behaviour. It's an antipsychotic that basically puts a damper on brain activity. I can tell you that it just sapped my energy and made me hate getting up in the morning. Was the cure worse than the condition for Ian?
