Colin's my favorite Wire member tho, so it's no surprise I'd like this.
I'm surprised that you don't lean towards Bruce. Listen to some of those solo albums. Listen to Dome.

Bruce is fine. I just like Colin better.
I feel that there is a fascistic element, for example, in the Rolling Stones . . .

Huh. I would have bet money that you'd gravitate to Bruce or Graham. It's all relative, of course, but Colin and Robert are the most mainstream and straight-forward rock guys in Wire. One of the reasons why the new album (and the last e.p.) lacks that certain Wire spark, of separation from everything else, is the lack of Bruce noise and irritation. It sounds like the band is various shades of happy and relieved to be working without Bruce—long time fans say that the band are enjoying themselves onstage much more now without Bruce—but that bit of sand in the oyster shell is necessary for the pearl, y'know? A lack of tension.

Somebody was trying to tell me that CDs are better than vinyl because they don't have any surface noise. I said, "Listen, mate, "life" has surface noise."

Folks really need to hear the Dome albums, plus Gilbert & Lewis' "8Time." Actually, all the stuff that Gilbert and Lewis were doing during Wire's first hiatus, but especially those five albums.

I have Dome 1&2. It's interesting, but not something I spin regularly.

"8Time" is probably the best of their early recordings, but Dome 1 & 2 are right up there. I think it's pretty apparent from those albums that it was Gilbert and Lewis who gave Wire the vital push into weird and unknown territory and kept them from any hope of mainstream success. Which isn't to say that Newman was a McCartney, with one eye always on the charts, but that of the three, he was (and is) the most pop sensible. And it's that sensibility that makes Wire step out of the wholly avant realm into something like rock. Just a perfect mix of contrasting styles and ambitions.

This is a great album. I love Send too, but it's basically a collection of ultra-basic riffs. This has a lot more depth and texture, and a nice mix of tones- hard and soft. This is the Justice League Unlimited to Send's first three seasons.

I'm loving O47 as well--I suspect we're both Colin fans... true?

Listen to the other guys' non-Wire releases, especially Graham's.

In order to appreciate the other members of Wire, I suggest listening to some Jerry's Kids. Because shut up I'm not the one on trial here! is why.
