Inder's Takes — Nilsson

Post by Inder »

I'm going to do all my Nilsson raving here. I'll do the albums a la Matey when I go to listen to them again, but I wanted to post this!

It's like a one-man Beach Boys via late-Beatles — down to the doot-do-doo harmonies at the end and the Lennon-like "but then the rain start to fall, making fools of them all" descending turn at end.

I'm going to do Pandemonium Shadow Show tomorrow, but in the meantime, Walk Right Back/Cathy's Clown/Let the Good Times Roll:

I'll get back to this — honest!

HN's Daddy's Song sounds more like The Monkees than the Monkees' version.

Does that bring together Touch of Schmilsson and Touch More? Great album.

On a related note, I've just dived into the quad-mixes of Pussy Cats and Schmilsson — they're both excellent.

OK Inder as someone who only owns Schmilsson and some cheap comp I bought years ago. What other album/albums do you suggest I check out?

Son of Schmilsson is criminally overlooked. It's a perfect bridge between Schmilsson and Pussy Cats (ignoring, for the moment, In the Night).

Brass boogie, perfect Johnny Cash parody, beautiful piano/guitar tracks in the vein of his more McCartney-esque 60s material, a proto-glam ( :shifty: ) track, sea shanty singalongs. And, of course, this:

As a random observation, Mucho Mungo/St Elga sounds a lot like Mondo Bongo, especially when we get into the Mt Elga bits.

Lennon's fascination with island riddims is really evident here — the production sounds like him trying to approximate a dub. Especially with the harsh stereoscopic trem and phased acoustics.

There's a decent amount of Nilsson demos/unreleased tracks out there, but I'm sure you know that.

I don't have any of his (or anyone's) quadrophonic releases since I do all my music listening in 2.1 systems. My 7.1 system is for HT. I do know that his quadrophonic releases have been transferred to DTS 5.1, but I have never checked them out.

He wanted to title Duit On Mon Dei ("Do it on Monday" — an old Apple Corps. joke, or the result of a drunk night in Santa Monica, depending on what you read) "God's Greatest Hits"... the company wouldn't have it.
