Best Ramones Drummer?

Post by Suzanne H. »

I'm curious.

For the record, I'm choosing Marky.

By the way, I'm not obsessed with the Ramones AT ALL.

unfair question. Marky Ramone should count as two people (him + his hair).

Marky wins for his "Good one, Mr. McGree" line in RnR High School.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

definitely marky.

edit:

if you think about it Marky is the ORIGINAL Ramone drummer, technically it is Tommy, but he was just filling in for the mean time. Kinda like Tory did in The Clash S/T. Tommy wanted to produce, just like Tory wanted a Jag.

also: most of the surviving Ramones are drummers, 4 out of 5 to be exact. C.J. is a lonely bassist.
big business it dont like you

Actually, Joey was the original drummer back when Dee Dee was still lead vocalist. Tommy was just producer for the 1st album who ended up doubling-up on drums in studio and then staying on as a band member for 4 years because they gave up trying to find anyone else. So even though he was the 'original' it was only a side job for him and he didn't intend to stay forever. So I'd have to go with Marky as their only true fit even though he came on after the untouchable '77-79 era.

tommy was the first. all the later drummers signed up to play in the style of tommy - screwball not pinball.

Me!
Admittedly I haven't heard any of his work with the Ramones, but he's one of my favourite drummers.
There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board

Much as Kenny Jones was fantastic with the Small Faces and not so great with the Who, Clem was a poor fit for the Ramones.

Didn't he play one show with them?

Obviously a poor fit or he would have played more... ;)
