I know! Can you believe that prosecutor? Interfering with someone's right to entrepreneurship. It's disgusting.

He sold a small amount of Coke to a bloke who'd been drinking in his boozer for 6 weeks, hardly selling shit to kids outside Schools is it? Poor set up bastard doesn't deserve jailtime, big fuck off fine and a suspended sentence would have been more than enough. The war on drugs has been a lost cause for years, time for a complete re-think is long overdue :(

Do you think the Sun randomly picked on JT's Dad and befriended him to get him to supply coke or do you think they had correct information that he was a dealer.

There's nothing intrinsically immoral about being a drug dealer, I think.

Re: The John Terry Moral Reasoning Thread
This is actually an interesting moral question and a good use of the thread: is dealing drugs intrinsically immoral? If so, what distinguishes a drug dealer in a moral sense from a barman?

Wouldn't that depend on whether you thought it was morally wrong to break the law regardless of whether you agree with the law or not.

That would be a factor. Is that what you think?101Walterton wrote:Wouldn't that depend on whether you thought it was morally wrong to break the law regardless of whether you agree with the law or not.

Re: The John Terry Moral Reasoning Thread
That could be a factor. The question then is how you judge whether a law is just or not, and if a law is unjust but ought to be obeyed, what would you morally counsel in the case of a totalitarian state (for an extreme example) where the whole legal system is patently unjust? You have to judge the law by some sort of ethics, and the question then is whether that ethics should supersede the law in cases of patent injustice. Then, bringing it back to this case, you'd have to determine whether this is such a case. I think that even if you allow exceptions to the "law ought to be obeyed" moral rule, drug dealing wouldn't necessarily meet the requirements.101Walterton wrote:eumaas wrote:This is actually an interesting moral question and a good use of the thread: is dealing drugs intrinsically immoral? My own position, of course, is that state-promulgated law has no moral authority because, as it is non-consensual, it violates the moral rule against aggression and thus is on the same moral authority level as a mafia protection racket. That said, there may still be good reasons to obey a law--if it is independently moral (for example, the law against murder), or if disobedience would be imprudent (it's probably unwise to disobey traffic laws, for example).
