Plastic money? That's a terrible idea.

No. An Israeli (or really anyone that has half a brain) should know that reasoning is asinine.
Make it so it is nearly impossible to forge, it requires far less replacement than those flimsy dollar bills we have that go out of circulation after 2 years or so, what's asinine?
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Well, for one thing, everytime they upgrade the damn bills they're going to have to perform a very costly recycle on them or leave a huge amount of nonbiodegradable waste. To add all the anti-forging stuff will involve a lot of costly processes, which will increase the cost to print, not to mention the entire switchover to a completely different printint method. Also, every attempt to change money beyond very cosmetic things in the past 5 decades is met with annoyance and anger from the public.

Fuck it, recycle it. The amount of money saved by converting to non paper money is, from my understanding, tremendous and may or not be enough to cover the cost. I don't think either of us know.
Wolter wrote:To add all the anti-forging stuff will involve a lot of costly processes,
It already does

Again, the cost/benefit change is unknown to me.

People don't want to change over to the metric system or have universal health care either.

Since this is a Dictator thread, Hoy, I'm going to take the liberty of not addressing any of your points, make a broad ad hominem attack of Bruce Springsteen fandom in general, then act like I've won this.

Hoy just thinks Israel is going to go to plastic money because he's anti-Semitic. :shifty: He only started liking Springsteen when he realized he WASN'T Jewish.

By coincidence—or is Mossad at work again?!—in the budget announced today, Canada is converting to plastic money.

Yes but no. No everything from Oz is not good, Jimmy Barnes for one although he is Scottish. But yes plastic money has been around for years. It was changed because surfies kept losing their ice cream money when they forgot to take it out of their boardies before going surfing, causing a shortage of notes.

Is your impression that it's generally as good or better than paper money or are there drawbacks?

I would prefer either commodity money (gold, silver, etc) or local credit currencies (like L.E.T.S. or other stuff Kevin Carson talks about). A switch from linen to synthetic doesn't matter much to me so long as currency is fiat.

In that case, I fully expect American resistance to the entire notion... :shifty:

I remember seeing some panel discussion back in the late 80s, when the Canada-US free trade pact was being discussed, and the subject of a common currency was being talked about. The American on the panel said that it would never happen because the American people would never accept a redesigned money, that greenbacks have a mystic hold on Americans.

Ugh, I retract my endorsement of plastic money. Unless of course the Israelis do it.
