I don't buy in to the thinking that personal wealth is something to be ashamed of. Most of us study and work hard all our lives to get ahead and achieve something yet if we do well and the financial spoils of success come with it (it's not always financial success) why should we then be embarrassed about it.
Funny then that you should name yourself after a squat?
As Marky said I lived in a flat overlooking 101 for 10 years although obviously it isn't there now. Plus I am a 101ers fan.
Having said that I have no issue with squatting for those who need somewhere to live. I don't agree with land banking.

Mick's favorite drum machine is Jeremy Corbyn.
Good lad.

If only the tabloids were as interested in this as they were in him having a cheeky line with Kate Moss.

Listening to Battle of All Saints Road. Wouldn't change a single thing ab6out it.
Good god, the drums are awful. Sound like they're being played on "biscuit tin" setting on a Palitoy drum machine.

Mick's guitar is so quiet you have to wear a stethoscope to hear it.
What's your favourite drum machine?
Topper.

Once spent a summer myself squatting around the corner from 101 on Elgin Avenue. Good flats, clean and very safe, albeit a very noticeable drug issue. At least half of them empty too which seemed a terrible waste.

Reading back over this thread and the Corbyn references, it does strike me that had he lived, Joe would have been a very active participant in the anti-Brexit camp and, likely, a pro-Corbyn advocate right now. But then, there'd also be the inevitable "millinonaire musician living in his gilded Somerset mansion" backlash anytime he dared to open his mouth. The kind of stuff Billy Bragg regularly gets thrown at him, only multiplied times a thousand.

I dont know do musicians carry much by way of political or social power anymore. Did anyone pay a blind bit of notice to what the likes of Springsteen had to say before the US election last year? If anything, it seemed to me to have a negative effect.

Sad to report that while all the houses in Maida Vale/Hill are spruced up and occupied these days, the local pubs are dying out.
The Windsor Castle on Harrow Road closed down years ago, and the Prince Of Wales on the corner further down - the Irish pub - is now a Costa Coffee shop! (Apparently the pub was closed down by the police after the landlord was done for - I kid ye not - 'orally raping' a young bloke who'd passed out in the pub and got left behind after closing time)
Most upsetting of all is the sight of The Chippenham, of 101ers/Charlie Pigdog Club fame, which is now all boarded up with those aluminium panels on all the windows to deter squatters. Oh, cruel irony...

That started happening around the time I moved out. I lived on the corner of Chippenham / Walterton / Shirland so right across from 101 Walterton which was knocked down and on the Chippenham Rd side turned into a Dominos Pizza and Mini mart. The Chippenham was alive well and thriving when I left. The Windsor Castle (that housed the famous Johnny machine from from Protection Blue) was already in decline and had strippers to try and bring in the punters.
I knew about the landlord from The Prince of Wales but didn't know it shut as well. Across the road used to be The Elephant and Castle which was the first to close when they knocked down the tower blocks. That was also where the Shabeen was and where Metal Mickey used to sit outside on the wall with his bike.
Great memories of those pubs.

The Elephant & Castle was right at the bottom of the block I stayed in, recall it not having the best reputation but was never in it. Did stumble out of the Prince of Wales once or twice during my time there though, happy to report, never with my keks around my ankles! The other pub by the bridge is still there I think, or was the last time I was there, the one with the beer garden out by the canal. Bit more upmarket than the rest of them if i remember correctly.

Yes, it's now the Union Tavern. Named after the canal, rather than any political allegiances I bet! If you're feeling homesick 101 and Lowdownlow, you can have a look round:

Bloody gastro(enteritis)pubs eh?

There used to be so many great pubs round there then they either ripped the heart out of them and turned them into restaurants that sold beer or they just shut down. Is Angies still there? That was a great place to be in a Sunday. All the Irish musicians that were playing in London would turn up and they would just jam all afternoon for fun.

I only pass through the area once in a blue moon these days, and did so last week which is when I saw the boarded up Chippenham and Costa Coffee-fied PoW, for example.
I couldn't see at the time but I'm pretty sure Angies is still going. There's recent write-ups on it online anyway, if you google it.
I've never been inside and it seems it doesn't do cask ale which is a bit of a turn-off for me, although Guinness is a decent alternative. But your description - which may be a bit out of date these days - and other reviews suggest I should check it out. These back-street gems are getting harder to find.
