Interesting, cheers Briggy.

Mick talks about playing the songs for Tighten Up as a band, and struggling with instruments etc, but it's the most antiseptic record they ever recorded. Despite the great songs on it, it sounds all rinky dink and pieced together. Bizarre.

I agree with you that it's all too clinical sounding.

What I will say is all the MTV and most other TV hosts of music progs in the 80's were so bloody annoying.

It's a dichotomy. There is more band playing on Tighten Up than the previous two records, but there are also fewer kitchen sink overdubs and samples laid over samples, so the record sounds thinner.

I hated Tighten Up when it was released because it was so thin sounding, like a retreat. But I've come to appreciate it more as something … laid back? No, that's not quite the right phrase, but not so in your face, more at ease with the songs. So I've come to see it as a step sideways rather than backwards. My preference is still for the first two albums—I'll still go to the mat in defending them as worthy as any Clash record—but TU is more than respectable work.

I really like the songs on TUV'88 but I think the production could've been better. Mick was way over generous on certain tracks giving too much space to other instruments when in effect had he been more selfish with showing off his guitar playing the album would've had a little more ooomph. Mr. Walker in particular needs much more Mick. Paul's cover art is ace and there are strong songs on that album that just need to breathe a little more in the mix. Some solid pop songs on there and I can't help but feel "Rock Non Stop (All Night Long)" would've been a great single. Easy to sit back and criticize now of course long after the event. It still gets regular plays this end.

The drums sound like they're sampled from a bontempi organ. Guitars way too low in the mix all the way through. The end of All Saints Rd has some great lead guitar but you can hardly hear it.

Agreed, the album needed more guts.

"It's a dichotomy" Teddy was correct first time.

Either way faults an all it's a likeable record.

'More band playing', but 'record sounds thinner'.

Paradox.

I don't even think it sounds thin. Just badly mixed and the wrong drum machine. Imagine it with Greg Roberts playing real drums on it. See the Bradford 88 gig for an example.
