Guys, Lovers Rock

Post by matedog »

What a good song. Why all the hate?
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

The lyrics are a bit cheesy, but the music is good.

Hearing Joe sing about tantric sex gives me itches. But other than that.

tantric sex? "you must treat your lover girl right." wouldn't that be "good" sex?, contrary to not giving a shit sex.

totally unrelated :wide-eyed: persons in SF are trying to introduce new police procedures where the police would not actively seek to enforce existing prostitution laws. oh, they've got your back ladies.

I thought it was just promoting the use of condoms. Unless this is one of those "jokes" you people are always on about.

Horrible song. Another black mark on LC.
I feel that there is a fascistic element, for example, in the Rolling Stones . . .

I've studied the phenomenon of neo-provincialism in self-isolating online communities but this place takes the fucking cake.

I always thought the lyrics were about oral sex, which I think was pretty subversive for the time. But it's certainly not my favorite on LC...I never skip it though.

You Western man, you're free with your seed
When you make lovers rock
But woops! there goes the strength that you need
To make real cool lovers rock

It's ok, but it's the worst song on London Calling. The outro is the best part of the song.

Now let me think, was it human theories or he-man theories?
There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board

The lighter, goofier version on the Vanilla Tapes is a fun romp. I think the bad harmonica, backing whoops, and human beatbox noises pull it together pretty nicely without taking itself at all seriously. Much Clash-ier than the straight-on take on LC, which I absolutely HATE. It never fails to make me cringe hearing Joe talk about his own libido without snark. Which if you want to take to the nth degree is also why Fingerpoppin' makes me feel physically ill, because there he's also doing it without irony.

If the soundcheck tape for the 7/14/79 Rainbow show ever surfaces we'd probably get to hear the snarky pisstake version done live: http://homepage.mac.com/blackmarketclas ... inbow.html

It's great the lyrics are tongue in cheek...whoops there goes the strength that you need, indeed.

Oh right, you guys listen to lyrics

It's another stellar Topper performance that is a joy to relisten for me.
