A guitar like Mick's

Post by letfuryhavethehour »

Attention Mick Jones lovers ...

I just found a Bond Electraglide for sale on eBay in Europe. I would love to gobble it up myself just to bash out Rock the Casbah and Should I Stay or Should I Go a few times before I get kicked out of my band. I just spent money working on my own Joe tele tribute, so now is not the time to buy a new guitar. Plus, I am a telecaster devotee. Joe, Pete, and Andy Summers ... All were Tele men.

Here is the link: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Bond-ElectraGlide ... .m63.l1177

I hope that there is a board member out there who buys it ... I can't wait to hear how it plays.

Peace.

It seems cheap, but the guy doesn't have the Bond power cable that runs the guitar! I'd consider bidding otherwise, they're cool looking guitars.
There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board

Probably. Most of the 2000 units sold still exist and there is a parts aftermarket (some original, some hacked to replace any wonky 1984-era electronics that no logner work). They're collectible because of their rarity and uniqueness, but because they're so rare most people who have them won't risk gigging with them. Therefore they do get resold to afficionados in pretty damn good condition with not a lot of beaters left. It's akin to the aftermarket that exists to this day for DeLorean cars...Bonds are the DeLorean of guitars.

There are persistent rumors that Andrew Bond is going to license the design for replica manufacture, but he hasn't bit on any of the offers he's been getting for years. They are awesomely designed guitars, not just in looks. The graphite construction makes them very sturdy, they keep their tuning exceptionally well (big reason why Mick switched; Les Pauls are a notorious pain-in-the-ass to keep tuned, whereas a Bond requires bare-minimal fussing), the rocker buttons and LED indicators make it much easier to adjust volume presets mid-song for those who hate or have trouble playing and simultaneously adjusting knobs, they have a nice warm sound ideal for post-punky playing (see Mick's BAD-era sound or Joshua Tree-era Edge), and they are reputed to be one of the best-feeling rhythm guitars ever made...although not so great for complicated leads and sliding up (which is why Mick pulled out the Les Paul in '83 for the more rockabilly Clash numbers).

The problem with them was that they were too far ahead of their time for the mid-80's. The attached transformer was very heavy and bulky because of the extra juice and voltage conversion required to power the big computer motherboard inside. Think one of those humongous wall plug transformers that used to power 1980's video game systems...only bolted to the back and bumping against your chest while you're playing. Plus the motherboard is so huge and has so many chips on it that was pretty delicate with risk of overheating or having chips pop out or break. And I suppose you could get electrocuted if you played it outdoors in too much heavy rain. A modern remake would probably shrink that motherboard into a single chip that could take a lot more punishment, and do away with the bulky transformer entirely because the vastly shrunken circuitry would only draw a fraction of the power. So you'd have the same exact guitar without the two biggest drawbacks where the technology was stretched to the limit 20+ years ago, and it would probably cost much less because it was all the futuristic computer parts that made the original prohibitively expensive and thus a poor seller. I really hope they do get re-licensed for manufacture because they're so good and have such incredible design quality.

The instrument is in 9.5 condition, the only thing keeping it from being perfect is one of the dot fret markers , 7th fret, is missing and the amp cord that connects the power supply to the guitar.

Ahhhh.. Maybe there's a replacement? If it's just a power supply cord..
