What does this have to do specifically with Clash covers?
:shifty:

Most of 'em. I can count on three hands the number of Clash covers I've enjoyed.

A rare Heston/Wolter accord.

The Indigo Girls cover of Clampdown has to be the absolute worst.

This is my favorite:

A worthy cover:

A predictable cover that's not bad if a bit unspectacular:

That surf rock tribute album that Joe Public posted last year is pretty damn good. Definitely a creative approach to the songs.

I know Tom Morello is a big fan, but this just doesn't work:

On the other end, at the Strummer Tribute attended by Briggs, me, and the Spiffster, Briggs got a good recording of The Hooks doing a rousing version of Tennessee Rain:

I remember a couple of these from that Burning London tribute album... the changing of the line by 311 to "Punk rockers in LA" made me cringe. It doesn't seem that unreasonable but I just hated hearing it.

And Rancid kind of take the coolness out of the "I get violent when I'm fucked up" line when they slip the word 'fuck' into the song a few more dozen times. Because, as everyone knows, the more you say fuck the more of a fucked up fucking punk fucker you are!

My top 5 Clash Covers:

1. We are the Clash - Sparks
2. This is Radio Clash - The Urge
3. Rock the Casbah - Rankin' Roger and Pato Banton
4. Stay Free - Pete Wylie
5. Crooked Beat - Wreckless Eric (anything was always gonna vastly improve the original version)

Honourable mention to Asian Dub Foundation's version of Police on my Back, though it's obviously not a Clash cover.

Worst 5.....

1. Straight To Hell - Lily Allen
2. Hateful - No Doubt and Billy Idol
3. Janie Jones - Babyshambles
4. London's Burning - That horrible band on the Burning London album
5. Train in Vain - Annie Lennox

I enjoyed it. It is quite raucous.

And slow. And involving Pete Doherty.

I don't think Lily Allen's cover of Straight to Hell may even be among the worst five covers of that song.

It's not great, but it's not awful.

Probably my 5 would be culled from that Burning London disc, which actually wasn't even all that bad. The Bosstones still play Rudie Can't Fail in concert and it smokes.
