Clash humor thread...

Post by WestwayKid »

The Clash seem to often be labeled as a very "serious" band...but as we all know...they had a lot of humor woven into their lyrics from biting satire to the downright silly. What are some of your favorite examples of humor found within their catalog?

In Mick's version of Know Your Rights...after Joe implores the listener to "get off the streets" he then adds "don't you have a home to go to?" I know there is a message behind the satire of the song - but just the way he delivers that line is great.
"They don't think it be like it is, but it do." - Oscar Gamble

Claiming the obvious joke to get it out of the way:

Now, let's move on to better choices.

Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Dont think that's a great phonetic translation to be honest, but it will do.

I always thought this one was kinda funny:

Back in the garage with my bullshit detector
Carbon monoxide making sure it's effective

Even when it's not exactly joke-fun, the whole first album is mostly pretty playful.
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a bowl of soup
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a rolling hoop
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a ton of lead
Wiggle - you can raise the dead

Pex Lives!

Not a lyric, but obvious humour here.

I’ve always enjoyed the lyrics to The Leader. It is just like reading a Sunday red top aka NOTW.

Atom secrets, secret leaflet
Have the boys found the leak yet?
The molehill sets the wheel in motion
His downfall picks up locomotion
The people must have something good to read on a Sunday
The leader's wife takes a government car
In the dark to meet her minister
But the leader never leaves his door ajar
As he swings his whip from the Boer War
He wore a leather mask for his dinner guests
Totally nude and with deep respect
Proposed a toast to the votes he gets
The feeling of power and the thought of sex!
Now the girl let the fat man touch her
Vodka fumes and the feel of a vulture
The driver waited in the embassy car
The fat man's trap was set for capture
So the girl let the thin man touch her
Mixing questions, drunken laughter
The ministry car was waiting there
A minister knows his own affair
The people must have something good to read on a Sunday

I think Guns on the Roof is pretty funny, considering its inspiration.

The song lyrics are pretty serious. I never bought the “it’s about pigeons” shit.
I feel that there is a fascistic element, for example, in the Rolling Stones . . .

I've studied the phenomenon of neo-provincialism in self-isolating online communities but this place takes the fucking cake.

It's not about pigeons. But the timing is too close to be denied with that title.

I’d suggest a bit of both would be the truth.

I always crack up at Joe's rhyme of "mafia" and "get 'em out yer" on All the Young Punks.
