Happy Birthday Sandinista

Post by Heston »

I don't know if it's an age thing but it may be my favourite Clash album.

Was this meant to happen?

Don't really have a fave. I think of them all, as Neil Young might put it, as one big album. And as Joe put it (about 'Sandinista!') I wouldn't change a thing about it. (except making it longer with the dubs, re-mixes, b-sides and outtakes. Cheers, Marky!).

Not my favourite—I'm unimaginatively in the LC camp—but S! is the group's Rorschach album. Is it artistic growth or dope and ego run amok? Or: Do you see their adventurous spirit or do you see a punk band who betrayed 1977? S! is the album that says are you on or off our train?

The first Clash album I bought and the reason I became a fan. Happy birthday dear friend.

I'm fully aware LC is the better album but I'm starting to doubt myself.

Underrated, but to be fair - some of it could have been left on the cutting room floor. That said - the best tracks on the album are some of the best they ever did.

I think a little of all of these things - but that is not to say that is a bad thing. I love the insane mix of styles. Most work, some do not - but many bands never even tried.

Didn’t realise it shared a birthday with 50.5W albeit 20 years apart.
Perhaps I should have named her Sandy!

The train that leads to Side 6, definitely. :twitch:

Not just my favorite Clash album but my favorite album by anyone, ever. I know that's not a position I can rationally defend but I like what I like and I like S! the best. Happy Birthday!

My recollection is that the Radio 1 show on at 8pm until 10 pm before John Peel (probably either Kid Jensen or Janice Long) previewed some of the tracks. They didn't necessarily introduce them, maybe they were hoping to foil home tapers. Anyway, Hitsville UK came on without introduction and I remember thinking to myself "please don't let this turn out to be the Clash", even though I knew it was! However, once it was released, like most of my favourite albums it took me a few plays and then I was hooked.

I love this album for its sheer chutzpah alone. But my favorite album will be celebrating its birthday tomorrow.

I think you'll find that its birthday was last month.*

* No, I didn't know this. I looked it up on Uncle Wiki's Pedia.
