Evil Darling lyrics

Post by Heston »

Forgot what a gem of a song this one is, especially hearing it on the recent remastered Strummer stuff that was uploaded. Nothing turns up on an internet search, can anyone suss the lyrics out?

Here's my attempt, Hes:

In this town, that's the way-ay-ay-aaaaay it goes.

Say seven words for the sailors
Over out on the sea
But there ain't no saint just for killers
No mama's going to pray for me

Well I was blown here by the wind
To a rusty city left unnamed
The dusty singing cowboy died here
He's still doing tombstone things. ???

And he knew how hard it was to cry
This evil darling, this deep blue sky
To be the rain in a dying man's eye
Cry for water and you get no reply
Beg for mercy and laughter fills the sky

Dog Town (Owwww-woo!)
Morning/Mourning, she cries.
running in your eyes

Dog Town (Owwww-woo!)
There's no fruit from acid rain
Go see if the coffin kid has a lid that bears your name

In this town, that's the way-ay-ay-aaaaay it goes.

You've heard of lamp-lit haciendas
With wide-eyed/twilight (?) girls who harmonize/haunt the night (?)
But the senoritas you've befriended
Cut the stars all out of the mirrors of their eyes/ ???

Chica/She sent seven shotgun shells
Into the netherworld of Hell
She slaughtered 95 white chickens
So you can never break the spell
Follow her down boy
And you're bound to die

Down in canyons
Beyond the blind people's eye
She'll leave your bones
Down in the hunting/haunted ground

Those Cherokee(?) long/war dead
Got in your soul
Dead like a rock
Nevermore to roam

Dog Town (Owwww-woo!)
Morning/Mourning, she cries.
Barrels from the shotgun blaze right between your eyes

Dog Town (Owwww-woo!)
There's no fruit from acid rain
Go see if the coffin kid has a lid that bears your name

Dog Town (Owwww-woo!)
Morning/Mourning, she cries.
Barrels from the shotgun blaze/bled(?) right between your eyes
Bad dreams boys of my last night's Dog Town fight
Go see if the coffin kid has a box to fit/fill your size.

In this town, that's the way-ay-ay-aaaaay it goes.
Chewing oot a rhythm on my bubblegum

Thanks biopunk. I always thought Joe was singing "Dark Town", but Dog Town fits better.

Thanks from me too, and I thought it was "Dark Town" as well!

Dead like a rock
Nevermore to roam

Is "roam" actually "roll"?

I always thought it was, "Down in canyons, beyond the black eagle's eye."

I always realised it was "dog town" because of Joe's canine howl afterwards.

I can hear eagles too, (and bugles... :disshame: ). I still think it's "blind" tho':

"Down in canyons, beyond the blind eagle's eye."

(Projecting: You can see everything (to the horizon), and that's a whole lotta nothing?)

I think you're right there.

"Dead like a rock, nevermore to roll"

How does "Those Apache war dead." sound?

The latter sentence is aimed at anybody in general. No idea if you play the guitar or not...

I'll stick the chords up later Chuck. I used to strum along to that STH album many moons ago.

Some of the chord symbols have got out of alignment when I've posted but that's about the gist of it.
