Does anyone remember/have a source for Joe’s assessment of Crass? I can’t find it anywhere.
Is this it?

As Joe Strummer—at whose band (the Clash) Crass vocalist Steve Ignorant spewed venom with "White Punks on Hope"—cattily quipped: "Crass have done it in the ultimate way... self-sufficiency. I'm surprised they don't make their own guitar strings."

It is indeed, thank you!

Love the review, the writer is quite astute with his 101'ers comment. Cheers for these.
Indeed.
I especially like this quote.
Given the nature of 80s British music press, Joe easily could just have easily been a punching bag as much as he was revered.

Not a big mezcal fan, but I’d have to order that.
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense . If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

With the dust settled, and without the shock of the new, US North stands as one of the ultimate Strummer/Jones compositions.

Excellent track.

I love it but it makes much more sense as two shorter versions.
There's a tiny, tiny hopeful part of me that says you guys are running a Kaufmanesque long con on the board

VIDEO
I know the book was formative on Strummer. Watch this video, watch Peter O'Toole's eyes, and tell me if you can spot a flash of Joe.

The length is probably my favourite part.

Each to their own mate but I don't think the repetitiveness of that tune lends itself to a ten minute song.

Yeah I agree after the first 4.30 - 5.00 mins it benefits from a fade down as it just treads water after that. Great tune/song but it doesn't need that full length.
