And Rob Hirst can play circles around Topper in his prime.
Maybe he's a great drummer, but he doesn't play this very well. He seems to make the usual mistake of just thinking it's some simple tub-thumping and misses all the nuances. I've seen it done a few times. He also misses the obvious big fill at the start.
Yeah, I take your points. But Hirst and Topper are two very different drummers (though Hirst can swing as well as Topper). Topper's drum fills are as catchy as any of the other hooks in the song, so, yeah, I wish Rob had played them. Seems maybe they didn't practice it much. Oh well, I still dig it.
You know I'm with you on loving this band. I agree it just sounds like it was likely a last-minute decision to cover—Rob might even just be playing it from (admittedly cloudy) memory. I can't remember, did you get to see them on this tour?
Nah, and they just played First Avenue last Aug. 29th, dammit. Too much non stop fuckery with trying to sell and clear out my dad's house. Did you see them?
I did. It was outstanding, to say the least. I hope you can check them out when they come back around.

"London is calling and I live by the river"

Drums are pretty bad too, this is worse on second listen.
Say what? So Pete subs "drowning" with "calling" Big deal.

And Rob Hirst can play circles around Topper in his prime.
Also let's not forget that Joe forgot his own lyrics regularly.

I think it's very good. The ending is a bit curt, but the Oils are capable of capturing the mood, might, ambiance and spirit of the Clash live probably better than anybody, even Springsteen.
You almost got through two screens before I noticed and rolled my eyes.

I was round my Springsteen obsessive mate's house on Saturday and I relented on putting on his DVD of Bruce's 2009 (?) Hyde Park show. Useless cover of London Calling.

To be fair, we also watched the Dublin Show of the Seeger band (whiskey was involved) and that made me wanna pick up the acoustic guitar and bash at it. Completely different performer away from the spaceless E Street Band.

Fair point but to miss the "drowning" bit out is to lose the pay off line that the whole song hangs on. Just a bit shoddy I thought.

Maybe he was nervous.
