Wow, some really interesting stuff on this. Other than the previously unreleased stuff, we'll finally have cleaned up versions of Burning Lights and It's a Rockin World. Am I reading this right that Pete Howard gets cowriting credits on TIE and Pouring Rain???
I don’t think so. The names listed are the artists, not the writers. Like Electric Doghouse.” It notably credits only Joe, Paul and Pete on those demos. No Nick Sheppard. Also, not “Clash.”

The basement demo of US North will refer to Mick’s old home studio.
FYI, the “basement demo” of “U.S. North” has been removed from the Super Deluxe and replaced by a song called “Full Moon.” Mick felt that since the set already has the full studio recording of “U.S. North”, there wasn’t much value in the very rough demo. He thinks the compilers used a 101ers song instead but didn’t know which. “Full Moon”is still described on Joe’s website as a “basement demo”, which if taken literally, doesn’t suggest a 101ers song because Mick didn’t have the basement studio until the 80’s. Maybe the compilers are taking a small liberty, because “basement demo” could really mean anything.
So not the basement of 101 Walterton Road then.
Well, maybe so. The original song they were using was recorded in the basement at Portland Road.

Wow. I wonder if cassettes w/ “U.S. North” (Basement Demo) were already manufactured.

I don’t know. Mick says the Super Deluxe is a lovely package though, especially Joe’s writings.

Good decision, an extra unheard song!

Vastly preferable to a demo of one already on the collection.

Back in my day, cassettes could fit several songs on them. Thanks, Obama.

Addendum: I do agree with Mick's line of thinking, tho.

Don't blame Obama. Blame all the people who blatantly disregarded the warning that home taping was killing the music industry.

Not cool, Mick. I wanted that demo! Oh, well. I guess it'll have to lead off the Joe Strummer 002 box-set.

I think that instead of dropping “U.S. North” (Basement Demo), “Full Moon” (Basement Demo) should be added to side B. Better than having a blank side of the cassette.

A1. U.S. North (Basement Demo)
B1. Full Moon (Basement Demo)

Just my opinion.

The Clash have always been very protective of their oeuvre. Mick's veto of this demo is no different.

I think the demo is surplus at this stage on the box set.

Like most fans, I’m a completist on some level, but yeah. Unless this demo is either a significantly different arrangement/set of lyrics, it’s not going to be a selling point for people outside of the hardcore, given there’s already one version on the set.

We won’t get to decide for ourselves whether or not the “U.S. North” (Basement Demo) is significantly different/worth having. The super deluxe set targets hardcore fans, not those outside the hardcore, anyway.

If the official tracklisting didn’t state the demo in the first place, we would probably have never known about it. However, because it was mentioned, it has whetted my appetite, and I’m now thinking that having a blank side on the cassette seems dumb, especially for the $119+ price tag. The tracklisting should’ve been finalized before the announcement, press release, etc. instead of quietly changing it later. I mean, we became aware of this set ten or so years ago...not enough time to get it right?
