It's a fucking great drum sound and I love that fill by Pete at 3:09.
The overall sound with echo is brilliant. Now imagine the rest of CtC sounding like that with that production. It would've been great. A great stripped back sound should've been the way ahead. It beggars belief the cold turd we ended up with.
Seriously. That sound, but with some even half decent leads? Damn solid album.
Concurred, what the fuck was wrong with them?

It has to be the power Bernie had over Joe. Bernie was a fantastic ideas man but how the fuck he got into the producers chair is bonkers.

Bottled it and went for something poptastic.

Nah it's more complex than that mate. Joe believed in Bernie and his ideas were often very good. The busking tour etc all worked. And it's exactly that stripped back sound that the band were working with. How it went from that to the sound effects is bizarre. It has to be that Bernie heard B.A.D. and thought if Mick could do it then so could he.

I still don't know why they're not just calling it The Clash rather than Strummer, Simonon and Howard, it's bemusing.

Also, I wish Mick could have partook in a bit Free As a Bird-style tinkering on this one. It would have certainly gave the album a lot of publicity, and filled out the sound.

I would love that but I doubt Mick would even consider it.

Mick is far too savy.

Presume it is Strummer, Simonon and Howard for legal reasons.

Possibly, or still wounded feelings.

The precedent is there with the Beatles. What else is Mick doing? The fans would have loved it.

Mick has always been one not to look back at this era fondly.

He did like This Is England. I just think it could have tied up a few loose ends, and hell, maybe even laid the ghost of CtC to rest. A last word as it were.

I gotta say, I was never too fond of Nick's leads on the live versions. They always seemed a bit cheesy.

Anyone fb friends with Pete? I'd love to hear the story behind this recording. Was it pre-Nick? Were other songs recorded?
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

so the vision of a ctc as an acoustic walker with lots of base would've been the way - if bernie didn't do rhodes?
