Silent Majority wrote:Hah. As you know, I've been catching up on US history via Presidential biographies. I've opted to skip around now that I'm in the twentieth century. So soon after my read on the James Garfield shoot 'em up, Destiny of the Republic, the next one of interest was McKinley, Terror etc in pretty much the same vein. I'd gotten it for free, like most of the books I mainline and I had the much more interesting looking three volume Theodore Roosevelt bio by Edmund Morris sitting there. I literally said out loud: "Fuck you McKinley, I'm skipping to Teddy." If I'd read the book, I'd know if Leon Czolgosz had said about the same.
You need—*need*—to read or listen to Sarah Vowell's wonderful book, Assassination Vacation, which is a breezy travelogue of visiting the sites of the assassinations of Lincoln, Garfield, and McKinley, along with histories of each murder. It's popular history, but Vowell is insightful and charming and a half (I would love to share a supper date with her to geek out on American history). If you can't find a copy, I can hook you up with either the ebook or the audiobook. The audio version also has the hilarious and intentional miscasting of Stephen King as Lincoln and Jon Stewart as James Garfield (whom she portrays as the patron saint of Gen X slackers). I absolutely adore her work.
I'd be glad to take you up on that offer for the audio. Are you getting the Clockwork Universe at a reasonable rate?
Yup. It kicked in shortly after I posted. I'll PM you a link after I upload. I kinda want to abandon my current audiobook and listen to AV again. Honestly, there are so few historians that I admire, but I so love her approach and humour. Plus she has a super weird voice. You'll either dig it or hate it.
She played the daughter in The Incredibles, if you want a yardstick of the voice.

I'm going to be rubbing elbows with potential presidential candidate Bernie Sanders on the plane today.

Ask him whether he thinks he's as much of a socialist as that Muslim Kenyan socialist in the White House.

I'll be honest: politicians who fly coach do impress me, superficial as that might be. They can normally get 1st class covered and flying coach sucks, so rejecting the comfort zone does impress.

I flew Southwest with Gray Davis once. That was neat to see.

(For those who don't know, he was the CA governor who was recalled and replaced by Arnold).
Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Yeah I'm a regular captain of industry. I managed to get a biz class seat once when I had to go to Japan and points beyond.

Bernie was cool though his wife picked him up in their Subaru. He's mostly a pretty down to earth guy. We shop at the same grocery store and back when we had the neighborhood video store I'd see him there too.

He's not known throughout Eastern Europe as the Vermont Fancy Man for nothing.
