A Question For Americans
For those of you in salaried employment, how much annual leave do you get a year from your employer? (i.e. not including Bank Holidays / Stat Days / Public Holidays or whatever they are called).

I get 18 days/year which includes sick leave. I count myself as lucky since 15 days is standard (10 vacay, 5 sick). In a year and a half, I'll get five more days. I can take it whenever/however.

When I started at this job I got 10 days (plus 3 floating holidays and 12 regular holidays) and I5 sick days. After 5 years it went up to 15 regular (the rest stays the same). We can carry over 7 regular days, but we don't carry over sick days.

I get 200 hours (25 days) annual leave each year that can be used for sick leave, vacation, or whatever. I also get 16 hours (2 days) floating holidays that can be used between Thanksgiving & New Years.

where I am it is at the discretion of my boss. As far as I am aware 10 is normal when you start and it goes up after 5/10 etc years

That qualifies under sick leave at most places. It varies A LOT depending on where you work, and how long you've been working at an employer. They usually start tacking on vacation days after you've been there X years (usually 1, 2, 5, 10 are the increments where you get increases). Some places you can accumulate unused vacation days and bank them into the next year...some are "use it or lose it". You do, if you quit or are laid off, get to cash out your unused vacation days. And there are usually "floating holidays" you can burn any time, since the U.S. has deleted the separate Washington's Birthday and Lincoln's Birthday holidays in favor of one Presidents' Day, and most states don't grant Columbus Day off anymore on account of...uh...that genocide unpleasantness.101Walterton wrote:So 10 is the norm? Most jobs I've had ranged between 10-15 days off, with sick included.

I get up to 169 hours of vacation and 169 hours of sick leave. It doesn't start over at the first of the year, you just have to re-accrue it. So, when I went on maternity leave, I had all 169 hours, so I was able to take two months off paid (using sick and vacation) and then re-accrued one week in each. So I took three months off total with only two weeks unpaid. Worked out well. Usually, however, I take a week off at a time. We also get a LOT of Jewish holidays off. I also don't need to use vacation or sick unless I miss an entire day, since I am considered "exempt." As long as I get my work done, I basically come and go as I please. If I have to leave a couple of hours early with a migraine or something, I don't have to take any leave time for that. Same with doc appts, etc.

But I've worked for the same organization for many years. A new colleague starting tomorrow would get 18 days off per year.

It all really depends on the employer and I assume Union membership. I have a friend who had knee surgery in September. The doctor estimated he needed six months off. He works for a casino. They gave him the entire 6 months at half-pay though he went back to work a couple of weeks ago after the doctor cleared him. My older brother works at a sporting goods store he gets paid vacation/sick leave. I don't recall exactly but somewhere around two weeks worth per year.
I'm so punk, I don't even take my leather jacket off when it catches fire. Which it does frequently, because of how fucking punk I am.
