Actually, yeah. He invented PECOTA about ten years ago, a system for predicting player and team performances (he predicted that the White Sox would go 72-90 in 2007, which everyone laughed at; guess what their record was?). In 2008 he moved on to poll analysis and was near-perfect in the election, and really good in 2010. He called all 50 states correctly this year, but we're still waiting on finally tallies for how well he did on the popular vote.tepista wrote:He's a SABR, I'm guessing?Dr. Medulla wrote:

Yeah, I got a crash course in his political career a few days ago. When he went on Colbert he put my mind at ease. Didn't know about his baseball deal.Dr. Medulla wrote:Actually, yeah. Re: The Election Thread To Talk About The Election
It's notable that the political pundits who mocked him the past several weeks sounded a lot like the same baseball writers who mocked him from around 2002 to 2007. As I mentioned upthread, the one thing I'm really happy about this election was validation of a Math Tits, Warrior Class.tepista wrote:Yeah, I got a crash course in his political career a few days ago. Nate Silver went to undergrad right here in Moranjortsville at Washington University. The same place where I went to grad school. Do you guys want to touch me?
ETA: OK, maybe for some of his undergrad?

Nate had the popular vote at 2.5 for Obama. Looking very close to that. I've read his stuff from day one. Then again, I started reading Bill James over 25 years ago.

Re: The Election Thread To Talk About The Election
Silver called the popular vote to be 50.8 to 48.3; the current figures are 50.4 to 48. So he got the separation pretty much right, too (but missed .9% going to other parties).
