I thought the entire point of editorial cartoons was that they were unfunny and overdid it with the labeling?

It seems to be a time honored tradition stretching back to the development of the newspaper itself: unfunny and overly belabored editorial cartoons. If you don't like it, move to fucking Cuba you goddamned communist. FREEDOM!

From a time when narrative felt it necessary to hit the reader or viewer over the head. White hats = good guy; black hats = bad guy. Were people actually that unsophisticated and undiscerning or were producers of fiction that biased in their opinion of the consumer?

Also, in the 19th century, the actual appearance of politicians was less well known. In the TV age, you don't need to label the jug-eared, squinty-eyed apeman with "Pres. Bush." for most people to know the caricature...
