I wanted to understand Europe’s populism. So I talked to Bono.

The only way to counter the dark, pessimistic vision being peddled by nationalists and extremists, Bono says, is to have an uplifting, positive vision.

Yes. If only those prisoners in Auschwitz were more *positive.*

I recall that rebuttal against that moronic book, The Secret, which advised Oprah and her book club that everything in the universe was theirs for the taking if they wanted it badly enough. To which more than a few people observed that the Holocaust victims just didn't want to live badly enough, rape victims did think positively enough, etc etc. If good shit happens because you want it hard enough, the converse must be true about bad shit.

A part of me yearns for the amoral catharsis of a Sherman's march to wreak terrible vengeance over these motherfuckers.

My pacifist values are being challenged by a desire to see these assholes beaten savagely and to know real fear for the first time in their lives.

Big shock, but maybe Scott Adams is a nitwit. Clearly, the meaningful data events are the Patriots going undefeated in the regular season and losing the Super Bowl plus the Red Sox winning the WS plus the Mighty Ducks winning the Stanley Cup.

(Also an economic disaster that almost brought down the global economy.)

"Scott Adams is a great cartoonist but he has no idea what he’s talking about when it comes to the impact of technology on our housing choices. People love to blame our cultural obsession with technology for a number of different ills, and there’s no question that the iPhone and the internet have changed the way we live."

Is he, though? No. He most certainly is not.

I feel like they chose some of these for the stupid arguments.

Kim is voting, but I didn't bother to register this year. The probability makes it almost wholly symbolic. I guess we'll see what happens. I hope the Dems get in so we can see them hem and haw and stall and do nothing. Woohoo.
