If it gets more Americans to think of themselves as working-class and that the American dream of getting rich is a actually a pipe dream, that's a good thing. Well done, crass Republicans, well done.

I dunno, there's a lot of Americans that plug their ears and scream lalala and all that.

It's been said many times that one reason why non-wealthy Americans resist taxing the rich is because they think they'll be rich one day, and so they don't want to fuck over their future selves. I have know idea whether that rationale actually exists—it strikes me as simple shitting on the average person's intelligence via hypothetical—but it's harder and harder for anyone to think that they'll be better off than their parents anymore, let alone become wealthy.

I've heard that a lot too. I can't think of any other way to account for my blue-collar father's political opinions.

We privilege some types of evidence and reject other kinds. We apply optimism and charity to some situations and cynicism and fear to others. That's kind of a simple way of looking at it, but it does come down that kind of privileging and desire to belong to particular herds but not other particular herds.

I thought this was an interesting piece on the prospects for nonviolent struggle.

I've studied the phenomenon of neo-provincialism in self-isolating online communities but this place takes the fucking cake.
