Have to admit lately the world has a "30's-lite" kinda feeling going on.

The chief difference (at least in the West) is that rather than try to harness the masses via government supports and experiments with mixed economies, the adoption of austerity measures is more of a fuck you to the non-wealthy. But finding enemies everywhere has never been so popular.

Yeah, awful slurs made about Jews, Mexicans, or homosexuals have no place in comics because of, you know, progress, but them gypsies are subhuman so it's cool.

I have been so pissed off about those comments. Fuck Peter David.

It takes a willful stupidity that goes well beyond gullibility to believe that parents would cripple their kids to make them better beggars and that it's an expression of culture. An isolated example, sure, human depravity is unfortunately elastic, but that this is somehow widespread and traditional? Christ.

Wow! I'm not really into comics so I never knew this was acceptable, it's deplorable! But it's also totally acceptable to show Roma in a derogatory light on TV, there is a disgusting show in the US called Gypsy Wedding and it makes me sick.

Comics are very gradually getting better at this, but a lot of the old guard are entitled white guys with caveman beliefs.

Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

Romani in the US seem far more assimilated. There doesn't seem to be the stigma of thieving subhumans that you get in Europe. At least that has been my experience. In fact, that Gypsy Wedding show pretty much just portrays them as white trash. Which is bad, but far from the stigma they have in Europe.

Yeah, I usually get a little hesitant when asked "where are you from?", which is a very common question in New York because so many people are immigrants or first generation Americans. I usually just answer "from Florida".
