Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

To the degree where it's comparable to what's happening to the Roma or what happened in the early 1930s? That shit'll always exist in pockets and on the fringes, but I'm talking about spreading to more mainstream tolerance or even promotion. Anti-Semitic persecution is a much more difficult sell now. The real push to mainstream acceptability will be Muslims—it's too easy of a target for so many reasons, not the least of which is their growing numbers but otherwise marginalized status in Europe. Add in genuine examples of Muslim violence and the repressive response is an easy sell. Much more difficult to do that with Jews, even if Israeli treatment of Palestinians encourages anti-Semites.eumaas wrote:But anti-Semitism is already on the rise. Not to that degree, but my statement was that I expected it to rise, not that it was already comparable. I don't think I'm crazy for perceiving a rise in anti-Semitism in Europe.Dr. Medulla wrote:To the degree where it's comparable to what's happening to the Roma or what happened in the early 1930s? What I'm saying is that as it's acceptable already to fuck up the Roma, it'll grow acceptable to fuck up Muslims and Jews as well. I agree that the latter case would not come to fruition as soon, but I don't think it's unreasonable to think it possible.

Re: This is a fucking outrage.
Very true. In the past, anti-semitism had a lot to do with a lack of assimilation into european culture (as seen in the rise in anti-semitism in Poland prior to WWII which was mostly due to a rise in Russian Jewish immigration who had yet to assimilate as other jews had in the historically accepting country). These days it seems to go hand in hand with the rise Islamic terrorism. So their squabbles are essentially leading to a rise racism against both in mainland Europe. The anti-Muslim rise is a bit more complicated though as it deals with the rise in terrorism and lack of assimilation.eumaas wrote:But anti-Semitism is already on the rise. Look at how quickly anti-Zionism blends into anti-Semitism.Dr. Medulla wrote:The difference between now and the 1930s—the last big European anti-Semitic heyday—is the existence of Israel, a major player in the international community. Much of what happened to the Jews before occurred because they had no advocate to spur other nations. The US, too, is much different in its policy toward Jews than in the '30s. I'm not as inclined to think anti-Jewish sentiment will grow when there are weaker scapegoats to take the beating.eumaas wrote:I'm guessing all three will get it.Dr. Medulla wrote:Hence my view of history as more cyclical than linear. We like to act out the same dramas over and over, recycling plots and dialogue because the audience keeps coming back.eumaas wrote:It's so horrifying to see the same arguments used against Jews yesterday used against the Roma today.
Altho this time around it won't be Jews but Muslims. Anti-Muslim sentiment seems an easier sell these days.Send Αλέξανδρος Christian Bishop back a few years and he'd be arguing Jewish children ought to be shot since they grow up to poison wells. I have no doubt that as the Roma problem escalates, anti-Semitism will gain ground. "Neither is reasonable enough to discard all their traditions and fully imitate the majority... maybe the problem is in the blood."

Re: This is a fucking outrage.
If it does rise to a significant level, it'll be due to totally different reasons than before. And by that I mean scapegoating looks for easy targets, and Jews as a people just aren't as easy a target anymore, whereas Roma and Muslims are. For serious anti-Semitic persecution to erupt, it would take a widespread war that covers Europe and the Middle East—that is, a total breakdown of the international order. In that kind of chaos, sure, old animosities would re-emerge. In a gradualist sense, tho, no, I just don't think the conditions are indicative.eumaas wrote:http://www.adl.org/PresRele/ASInt_13/5465_13.htm
