Yes, it certainly is.

It's hard to watch as one of my favorite countries turns to the right...

Faulkner's line about the past not being dead, that's it's not even past seems, once again, appropriate. The West keeps repeating these cycles, oblivious of what it is that it is repeating. One damning thing about it seems to be that, despite amazing advances in communication, people seems less aware of what's happening in Italy than they did about Germany in the 1930s.

The only place I see this shit prominently are the Romani and Jewish sites I visit. That's it. It should be fucking front page news that a European nation is doing this, but it isn't. Imagine if this was the headline: "Italians welcome army on streets as anti-Jewish sentiment sweeps country"--people would immediately think "oh shit! The Holocaust again, this is an outrage." Yet there's hardly any of that feeling outside Romani and Jewish (who keep a close watch on this shit as they're often next!) advocacy organizations. The ADL to their credit for example issued this a while back:
http://www.adl.org/PresRele/DiRaB_41/5290_41.htm
though they haven't been keeping it as high profile as they should... If the Roma are being attacked as foreign enemies it's not long before other groups get the jackboot.

"In Germany, they came first for the Communists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist;
And then they came for the trade unionists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist;
And then they came for the Jews, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew;
And then . . . they came for me . . . And by that time there was no one left to speak up." - Martin Niemöller

I don't think I've seen anything, news story or commentary, on any American newspaper site. The Guardian Online is the only place that I regularly read that has had any coverage. The West's collective historical amnesia or just plain disinterest in the past is the root of our doom. The only thing we tend to remember are grudges and bigotries.

Exactly. Authoritarianism has a nasty infectious quality. Working my way thru Human Smoke is reinforcing that truth.

Funny how that observation has popped up with increasing frequency since late 2001 …

Since the major powers seem willing to ignore this, I wonder if a Romani analogue to Zionism isn't the answer. Some kind of militant action is needed.

Shit...the way they welcomed the army echoes the welcoming of the German army into Vienna. Why don't people seem to see the implications of this?

More on the sunbathers thing...

So fucking sickening. Why isn't this in the American news? Why aren't the presidential candidates talking about it?

I hate to say it but it's true, people don't give a shit. Obama and McCain would never bring this up, ever. White people don't like seeing other white people do bad things.

Among other reasons, there are enough homegrown problems going on right now that raising it as an issue would likely make people think that the candidate cares more about other people's problems. All politics, as the saying goes, is local. If it can't be tied to American concerns, it's a non-starter.

At the heart of Europe, police have begun fingerprinting children on the basis of their race - with barely a murmur of protest from European governments. Last week, Silvio Berlusconi's new rightwing Italian administration announced plans to carry out a national registration of all the country's estimated 150,000 Gypsies
Doesn't this guy own basically 100% of Italy's print and broadcast media?

I remember reading some crazy shit about this guy around 2002 or so. This, though, is beyond reprehensible.

"Has there been a coup?" was the bemused response of one pensioner from Scotland.

silver gets back into power (he was great buddies with tony baloney) - the trains don't
run on time, so we will blame the gypsies.

meanwhile the army are working for the clampdown. :shifty:
