But the dead black man was a licensed gun owner who stated that he was carrying in the video.

The NRA is about helping sell guns and for some fifty years the marketing strategy is that people need guns to protect themselves from criminals*, and criminals are black and Hispanic. Defending the rights of a black man to carry a gun undercuts the entire argument of the industry.

* And the government, depending on which party is in power.

I can see the argument for suspension with pay over actions done while on duty—I don't necessarily agree with them, but there is room for them—but if you beat a fucking kid with a steel pipe while off-duty, there's no goddamned way you deserve a paid vacation.

As wretched as the police are, they still rely on gosh darn regular folks to give them a pass even in those instances when something goes to trial.
