Look, you have to establish context for these things. And I maintain that unless you appreciate the Fall of Constantinople, the Great Fire of London, and Mickey Mantle's fatalist alcoholism, live Freddy makes no sense. If you want to half-ass it, fine, go call Simon Schama to do the appendix.

I love this power-worshipping, psychotic remark in the comments section:
Look how many thumbs down you get for a normal story about cops.

The cynical losers on this site can't handle that other people legitimately have more power than them.

Cops seem arrogant because they have much greater power than you - and by law effectively dominate almost every situation they are in. This is going to naturally feel arrogant to us.

The American public are actually most arrogant and cynical - unable to grasp the requirements of the officer's job in the maintenance of moral order.

Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a rolling hoop
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a ton of lead
Wiggle - you can raise the dead

Reaction #1: "How many red state governors request Homeland Security money for one of these in time for the Gay Pride parade?" :shifty:

Reaction #2: "Wait...South African mines? What terrible reason would a employer of miners need one of these for? Why mines? Is is supposed to counterintuitively fly into the mines...or just shoot anything or anyone that attempts to leave the mines? What kind of mines? The nuclear kind, or the 'Every Kiss Begins With Kay' kind? WTF IS GOING ON HERE?!?!"

Well, that's awful. Clearly these people don't respect human rights the way we do in the West. There's no way police forces and governments here would ever want to use those things. Unless it's because the public demands them to protect our way of life.

This man sold single cigarettes for .50 cents. The NYPD said he sold some to minors. Apparently he had just broken up a fight. So they choked him to death. The cop who killed him has been relieved of his weapon and badge pending investigation.

LAPD was upset that St. Louis PD was getting all the action: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/08/1 ... 74679.html

What's happening in Ferguson is surreal.

It's heartbreaking to see this happening, even thought it should be the least surprising thing ever at this point.

If you haven't read it, I recommend checking out Radley Balko's Rise of the Warrior Cop. Militarize the police and their purpose necessarily changes from keeping the peace to doing search and destroy missions, where citizens become the cops' enemy. And all that high tech killing machinery requires bigger budgets, so they have to justify it by finding and taking out lots of dangerous enemies. It's a premise that works to reinforce the problem deeper and deeper.
