In a 1984 interview with the journal of the Labour Committee on Ireland (LCI), when asked if she saw herself as Black British, Abbott replied "No - I would self-define myself just as Black. Though I was born here in London, I couldn't identify as British and anyway most British people don't accept us as British. God! British people can be so racist".

In 1988, Abbott claimed at a black studies conference in Philadelphia that "the British invented racism".

In 1996, Abbott was criticised after she claimed that at her local hospital "blonde, blue-eyed Finnish girls" were unsuitable as nurses because they had "never met a black person before". In response Marc Wadsworth, executive member of the Anti-Racist Alliance, who is half-Finnish, pointed out that the then-current Miss Finland, Lola Odusoga, is black, of Nigerian and Finnish descent. "She's a black Finn like me," he said. Abbott's position was supported by fellow Labour MP Bernie Grant: "Bringing someone here from Finland who has never seen a black person before and expecting them to have some empathy with black people is nonsense. Scandinavian people don't know black people—they probably don't know how to take their temperature". 10/10 for toatal ignorance.

And my "typo" was changed to "type." Anyway, yes, skin tone was imbued with great axiomatic significance. The impulse to categorize vertically and then build worldviews was something that wouldn't have happened without the Enlightenment.

Surely every race, nationality, tribe, religion has displayed discriminatory behaviour since time began whether by colour, geography or iwi. Not saying everyone is equally to blame but it appears to be inherent in every society across the globe. The more powerful the aggressor the worse the atrocity.

Actually no. Certain kinds of prejudical discrimination have a definite history. You can go through the historical record and not find modern color racism. But it is in the interest of certain kinds of power that you believe these problems were eternal and have no history. Just like how people seem to believe capitalism is likewise eternal, as if medieval serfs were wage laborers.

I remember reading some early European colonial writings on Native Americans where the absence of comment on color and feature difference seemed conspicuous to the modern reader conditioned by modern racism. Instead there’s talk about godlessness on the one hand or edenic purity on the other.
Also a different ethos in the (going even earlier) medieval literature. The Saracen’s faith is at issue, not so much the physical difference. So yes, you can find prejudice and discrimination but it’s historically conditioned, which means it has a beginning, causal relations, and eventually an end. So saying the British invented racism isn’t exactly unreasonable, though I would say “Western Europeans” would be a better way of putting it. That said, the British Empire was highly effective in imposing racism globally.

Yes you are correct mate. Hatred has been with us since forever which is what I think you are trying to say here. As to the colour of a person's skin then that is a separate issue and I refer you to the answer given by Eumaas.
